The openings are 2.5" wide and the plastic can stretch. Premier1's chick fence, for example, has 3/4" holes. https://www.premier1supplies.com/poultry/fencing.php?fence_id=150

correct me if I am wrong, but "ain't no way" a chicken will get thru a snow fence

And it kills birds and squirrels that try to get through.
SA,
I haven't had any birds get stuck in our netting. Our local squirrels are ground squirrels and are treated as pests as if they are mice or rats. We have a few but between hawks, coyotes, snakes and the occasional Bobcat the squirrels are not a big problem.
BTW we are at 6500 ft/ 1676 m.
