My chickens have been wandering over to the neighbor's, so I built a temporary extra run onto their chicken tractor coop. See, they don't exactly see the coop as "home." They seem to think that the carport is "home." So I plan to keep them penned up for a week or so. It might not do any good, but it's worth a try. However, the rooster is overcome with hormones, and won't leave the hens alone. I hate to pen them up in the run because he has easy access to them. He's the most active in the morning and evening when it's cool, so what if I just keep him locked in the coop during the morning, and let the girls have the run? Will it makes things worse when he does get to be with them? What can I do to entertain them while they're locked up in the coop/run?

Hi
We had the same problem. We locked our flock in the coop for 3 nights and it did the trick. Could you put your rooster in a separate pen for a few days? I hope this helps :)

Thanks! Well, I really don't have another pen available. I just have the chicken tractor (4X8) and then the extra run (5X12). I can close the coop door and separate it from the extra run.

Do you have a large dog crate? In a pinch, it makes a fabulous little 'coopette'. Not that I'd want him in there for 3 days, he will be peeved when out....but it might work to seperate him at night (if you can catch him).
