Hello! We have 6 (12 weeks old) cockerels that have 8 more days til freezer camp. I have decided to keep 1 and want to separate him with the hens and without the teenage hoodlums. He will be with 8 hens and 1-2 pullets from his hatch.
Questions are:
Can chickens sleep close to the ground on a short roost? I can set them up under the coop away from the others easily IF this is humane. The set up would be a 5'X6' area about 2' in height. I would put a roost about 6" high off the ground for them to roost together at night. The area is predator proof with 1/2"X1/2" hardware cloth with apron extending 2 ft out. The wire is covered with plastic mostly which we will add more once good ventilation can be strategically figured out. The back opens to a string and tree covered run that is 8'X24' with a compost pile they love to scratch around in.
This would keep them separate from the main flock that is staying, but does it sound like an ok set up for 8 days? I know they are not staying but I want them to continue to feel safe and enjoy their life. But I also thought they would be gone this weekend and not next. Here is the set up. And Miss nosey hen wondering what I'm doing. It's she adorable?? Lol 💜 Thoughts??

That sounded pretty good until I realized there will be 6 birds in there.
It might work fine if they get along OK....or might be tight spacing.

At 30 sq ft for 6 chickens that leaves 5 sq ft for each. Why is this tight quarters? I was mostly concerned about sleeping on the ground or a low roost than I was about space.
And these quarters are for sleeping only. They get closed in after roosting and then let out by 7:30 am into a 200 st ft run.

I put cement blocks on the ground for my old chickens who can no longer fly to the roost and they do fine. I've even used carboard boxes secured in place.

Ah, ok. I'll be sure to keep a super close eye on their behavior. I've not seen anything beyond harmless face offs and I didn't think they would be full on fighting so young. Thank you.
Yeah, and reading back again, I didn't read any of it very closely(apologies)
12wo's probably won't be really fighting yet.
