What does Production Red mean? Are Production Reds the same as Rhode Island Reds, or are they some type of sex link?

8 of my chicks from the feed store (hatchery unknown) were sold as RIRs. It doesn't make much difference to me because I just want eggs. I'm just curious.

production red is a chicken developed for high egg production and probably has RIR blood lines with other breed of chickens mixed in and a production red is not a sex link chicken.
short answer, Rhode Island Reds are a breed of chicken and production reds are mixed breed. sex links are chickens where the male and female have different colors at hatch and can be sexed by color.

RIR's should be dark red, i have since learned this. My RIR is from a store and is production RIR, alot lighter and probally mixed with something else. Red sex links are when you cross a certian type(color) bird they have babies and red are females and blacks males. They sex breed them.Just learned that one as well! lOL

My production RIR (see on BYC page) is the sweetest chicken, great layer! 1 a day but i can't show her for quaility. Still love her~

post some pic's of your lil cuties~

Production Reds are hybrids, crosses in other words.
Invariably, the parentage is RIR or NHR and something silver (white), like white Wyandottes, Rocks or Leghorns.

Other names for similar crosses are the varied Cinnamon, Comet or Production "Browns."
Pure advertsing hype, BTW, meant to sell chickens.

My RIRs are likely production reds as well, also feed store birds, but they're nice chickens. I like one of them quite a lot, she's very friendly for a turkey hen reared bird. Likes to be held and eat from my hands.

True RIR's are this gorgeous dark stunning mahogany, deeply impressive when it's there. tadkerson has some on his website, oh my...

Production Reds for the most part are Rhode Island Reds crossed with a Leghorn. RIRs should be about as dark as a bing cherry..

Below is a picture of one of my RIRs.. He is a Rose Comb RIR and about a year old.. His offspring are from 8 weeks to 32 weeks old and darker than he is...

I guess I haven't posted any good pictures of them but you can see the color in this picture. The subject is a GLW but a couple Reds are in the background.

I have been watching for signs or any of the Reds being cockerels but at 9 weeks now their combs are all still small and yellow. At least one has some black tail feathers coming in but not sure if this has any significance.

Depends on what kind of Sex-link you are making.

If you are making a Red Sex-link, then the males will be mostly white and the females red with some hints of white.

If you are making a Black Sex-link, then the males will be black with a white dot on their head and the females will be completely black.
