I have had multiple bad experiences with insecticides. I would keep the chickens away from it as long as practical. The stuff used for my lab kills some vertebrates following uptake through skin.
Kept dry and changed regularly, any fibrous material, including pine shavings, will work. The only bedding I use is in actual nests. Owing to moisture situation, my bedding of choice is crushed oyster shell. Some of management practices are designed to control parasite issues by cultural methods that involve adjustments in timing or simply selection of materials that are not suitable for a given pest to close its life cycle. What's a good bedding beside pine shaving that's less attractive for termite?
