I called home on my way from home from work tonight. I got BAD heart wrenching news.

The neighbor down the road called my fiance around 1 o'clock and let him know that there were two dogs running around the neighborhood without collars. He went outside to check on our flock and found two of my 2 month old Blue swedish ducklings just ripped apart. One lost his head and innards were totally ripped apart and the other had it's feet ripped off.

I went in to check on my other baby and she was limping. I brought her in and held her for the longest time and she snuggled up against me and burrowed her bill into my hair.

I let her go for a swim in the tub and while she was in the tub and wetting her feathers, I noticed that she had a lot pulled out on her back behind her wings. I couldn't see anything wrong with her legs, so hopefully she (

) will be ok. My heart is broken when I think what those babies went through. I have 6 other adult ducks that leave the run and eat worms and such out in the yard, but the babies rarely ever left the run.

That's awful. I sure hope your snuggly baby is OK.

to those stupid dogs and their stupid owners!

You should get Mallards. They can fly away when something like this happens. Ducks historically (over hundreds of thousands of years?) use flight as a defense mechanism. The current domestic aka human bred ones can't defend themselves.

Thanks everyone

I do have 2 dusky campbell drakes that fly extremely well and I just wanted to have some blue ducks too.

I also got four ducks from sumatra at a chickenswap last month. Wow, are they good egg layers. Can't remember what they are a cross of, maybe runners, cayugas and ?- I don't remember now.

That is so horrific!
I am sorry for both you and your ducklings.

Don't blame yourself and try not to think about it too much, hun.
((hugs))

I know exactly what you are going through, I lost a duck this week too. My only consolation is I hope neither your baby ducklings or my chap suffered and what you saw were post mortum injuries. my deepest sympathy to you.

I'm so sorry that this happened. Secure your remaining ducks. Now that those dogs know where they are, they will eventually return.
