Make sure you put a load of gravel down first or the sand will pool the water even more.

Sorry you lost your girl

I would also recommend a necropsy, I too haven't ever had any instances of ducks with cocci.

I knew not to give sulfa drugs to waterfowl (and wouldn't give them any other antibiotics unless it was cleared by the vet) but I don't know what constitutes a "curative dose" of Corid or medicated feed. When I inquired about the dosage for ducks when they first got sick, I was advised that I should only use half-strength dosage in the water for the ducks, as they drink much more water than chickens or turkeys. Should I use a full dose for the remaining duck's water until his poop has firmed up and has more substance? I THINK he is somewhat better (still too thin, but getting better) but most of his feces is very, very watery with little form to it. I know duck poo is normally more liquid in form than chickens' poo, but how watery is TOO watery? How will I know if he is getting enough amprolium to be effective? ??? Alas, it seems that I still have more questions than answers.... (but PLEASE don't misunderstand -- I am VERY thankful for the input thus far!)

THANK YOU!!! That's exactly what I had wanted to know. I appreciate that so much! Hopefully he'll start getting better quickly, and hopefully I can find him a duck-buddy soon, too. He wanders in the (fenced) yard with the chickens, turkey, and guineas, but he still looks a little lost.

Again, thanks to all for your input and help.

Where is everyone buying liquid corid? And, are you using the cattle corid? I cant find any specifically labeled for poultry/waterfowl. Thanks.

I get mine at Jeffer's on-line

http://www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/

quit looking for poultry or waterfowl stuff, they hardly make any for us, we have to use the live stock versions in most everything
BUT, Jeffer's does have a large poultry section, and the liquid Corid does have the poultry dosing on the label. It will all be just poultry though. I have never seen a product of any kind labeled just for waterfowl directions.

Once the land has coccidia it stays dirty for years. The Corid type anti-cocci does not kill cocci it just slows their reproduction so the duck immune system can develope enough to fight off further attacks. The female MAY have had too much damage before treatment or her immune system did not develope well. If you can get a necropsy without excessive cost go for it since there may be another disease involved. ANY NEW poultry should be given some medicated starter before it is turned loose. Usually once immunity is built up the medicated starter is no longer needed...

I am happy to report that my poor lonely Pekin duck now has 2 jumbo Pekin ladies, a buff Saxony lady, and a Silver Appleyard lady for company. I brought them home and let them into his run while he was out in the (fenced) BIG backyard with the chickens, turkey, and guineas. He heard them "talking", and his head popped up in surprise. He came waddling/toddling over toward them, and at the same time they took off in his direction. He started fast-patting his feet like he does when he's making mud near the waterers. He met them, then led them out into the yard where he'd been before. He looks so happy to have others of his own kind again. Warms my heart... Now if he would just get them into the routine of going INTO the sleeping pen -- the place I got them from has many, MANY ducks of different kinds, and they had a huge pond. They just all slept wherever they took a notion to ... I prefer them to be in the dog kennel sleeping pen (10 X 10, 6' high, wrapped top to bottom in chicken wire w/ a metal roof) than sitting in the yard snoozing where they might be happened upon by a raccoon, fox, coyote, or owl. Ducky-boy is a happy boy once more.
