Ok...I'm testing my little giant bator. Some of you know I've had gender issues with fertilized eggs. So I decided to set some to see if they hatch. I candled them and there is a nice air cell in each egg.

A question I have is which eggs are the best eggs to set?

Short and fat
Long and narrow
Thick shell
Thin Shell
Clean eggs
Dirty eggs (should I wash them before I set them?)

Ok....Thanks in advance to all those who reply!

I like short and fat eggs to set, just a normal size nice egg!...always heard the long and narrow ones were roosters!...lol...clean eggs for sure, dirty ones can let bacteria into them and no on washing them, that takes the bloom off...some people just wipe them clean with a cloth as much as they can, but I don't set dirty eggs...thin shells can be porous and not usually used for a good hatch.........my opinions.....

"always heard the long and narrow ones were roosters!"

I have heard that too and didn't want to post it!! LOL Thanks for the giggle and reply!

Well...I've got 1 long and narrow...so I'll tell you in about 4 months if its a rooster! LOL

Short and fat, clean shelled, thick shelled

this has been my experience, both with incubators and with broodies, though some broodies can hatch anything!

Hi, Siz
Out of the 4 EE eggs that I set....it appears 2 are a maybe...and the other 2 are too dark to see thru. They are not stinky...so I'm just going to leave them in. We are at day 11 with them. I have not seen the spider yet...but the two do have yolks with dark oblong shaped next to them? I'll have to post pics here. I'm just going to hang out for awhile longer with them.

Dipsy Doodle Doo's silkie eggs were set last Wednesday and I candled them 3 days later. Most have nice fertilization no spiders yet. I'm going to post some pics soon...I want to try to get some of the spider veins.

The silkies are a cross between frizzle....so I'm curious how they are going to look. Wanted to wait on hatching...but just couldn't handle the pressure of winter waiting!

U got anything in the bator?

I won some Cuckoo Marans on Eggbid that will come in March...got to get my money order mailed. They are coming from Nebraska...I really cannot wait to get them. Hope I can candle thru the dark shells.
I candled the Silkies last night...7 are good. We even saw movement...the kids squealed...it was so funny! Cannot wait to see their reaction next week at 14 days candling!
