Greetings! My husband and I just got chicken-both hens and chicks for eggs.We want to raise turkeys for food and can them for soup and so forth. I read that a smaller white turkey has the best flavor. Does it make any difference? Which ones are easiest to raise, and can chickens and turkeys be together in the same pen?

! Great to have you with us!!! I must admit to ignorance when it comes to turkey and which ones taste best. I do know of a disease turkeys get known as blackhead - they contract it from chicken feces I believe, making it inadvisable to raise together. I'd advise you to check out the turkey thread below. Good luck to you!!

Thanks! Can anyone recommend a great book on raising turkeys?

. I would not advise raising chickens in the same pen. They might be able to free range together but adult turkeys can easily kill chickens. Plus chickens can pass on diseases to turkeys that will kill them.
