Hi!
Every year I end up with various 'babies' that have been abandoned (I have 7 'possums and 3 squirrells this year so far). I've always used the powdered kitten replacer before with fair results.
This year, I started all my rescue 'babies' on goat milk and I've had no losses at all --- everyone seems to be thriving and growing well.
Newest baby squirrell spent 3 days in someones trashcan "we got the pitchfork and tried to move it out, but..."
After they knew it was there 3 days, they called me. STUPID PEOPLE. They knew there was a baby 'something' in their garbage can for days and didn't make some action to save 'the baby animal'.. Heck, they didn't know what it was, but it made noise when they poked it with the pitchfork. What kind of person is so frightened of a baby squirrel that they would be so ungentle.
Poor baby squirrell, it isn't able to move it's hindquarters yet. Not sure if that is temporary trauma or permanent,
BUT...
Goat Milk may save the day.
With replacer, there was always a spell where babies don't drink as well as they *could*. With the goat milk, they don't hesitate and start drinking right away (so far).
Still fuming...
Lisa
