Greetings! I'm a new flock owner from the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains among the redwoods. I currently have 9, with 4 silkies, SL Cochin, GL EE, Mille Fleur d'Uccle, Australorp, and a Buff Laced Polish cockerel. All are 13 weeks old. All but the roo were ordered from MPC and were correctly sexed as female. The Polish came from the feed store unsexed, along with a Cuckoo Marans who was sexed female but turned out to also be male. He is no longer with us:( My avatar is my d'Uccle Margeaux, my favorite.
I built a 24sq ft coop (all by myself!) from reclaimed materials from my neighbor's remodel, with a roughly 20x20 ft run, 6-7 feet tall, on an otherwise useless piece of property on a slope. I took all of your advice and made the coop as large as possible & huge doors for easy cleaning. We are predator heavy, so I enclosed the run with welded wire. I'm starting composting, and plan on making a 'green roof' on top of the coop. I can honestly say it's been the most fun I've had in ages, and watching them grow from 1 day old in a box to lovely garden art with opinions has been pure joy. I'm currently suffering from severe chicken math, and have ordered another batch from my want list from MPC again. Learned my lesson from the feed store chicks. I'd rather just pay extra, especially for the bantams. Thank you to those who helped me through my Marans roo crisis.
I spent months researching on this site, and have learned so many pearls of wisdom that aren't in the books. This is such a rewarding hobby, getting me outside and active every day. My girls run to me and jump on my lap. Can't wait for eggs and new babies!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Cute flock you have! This is the place to be when you own poultry!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Thank you! I have not gotten to the roof yet, but this was my inspiration and what I'll try to emulate: http://www.thegardenroofcoop.com/p/the-coop-and-chickens.html
The roof is pitched south-east, to catch the majority of the direct sun. I'll probably grow greens in trays up there also and rotate them out.
The coop and run are still a work in progress, but here's what I have so far:
The towel on over the window keeps them quieter in the morning. I let them out around 8am. They put themselves to bed at dusk every night, I just have to shut the door.
the first pic shows a chair in the lower left- so cool because you are right at eye level with them as you drink your coffee. I can check their feet and butts just by watching them from there.

I plan to add another 80-100 sq ft pen to the left so I can rotate pastures and separate chickens if necessary. I'll build a small doghouse style coop up there for shelter or broodies hatching chicks.

Welcome to BYC! We used to live in the northern Sacramento Valley and we would fairly frequently drive to the coast and camp among the Redwood trees. In my opinion, Coast Redwood forests are the most beautiful areas in the world. You have a nice, mixed flock. I especially like the Australorps as they are very hardy, calm and gentle, and excellent layers of large, brown eggs. I also like the creative way you've built your coop and run. Good luck with your flock.
