Hello my name is Dawnmarie and I have had chickens for years. I believe that CHICKEN MATH is a real thing and with a Rooster in your flock, a very natural thing . Same amount of time for 5 vs 25 when it comes to chores and making rounds so enjoy! I am in zone 4 so I keep cold hardy chickens, and choose no artificial light sources. Less eggs in Winter but that's OK with me. Oldest hen is 7. I open their door each morning and their Rooster(s) guides them in at night. Pasture raised and sometimes you lose one, closest to natural as possible and we have the acreage for it. I would love to hear if anyone uses fermented food to stretch their budget in Winter and at what ratio? Thanks all!!

I live in Zone 4 as well. I ferment grains daily. I use 2 parts HHR (Henhouse Reserve,) and 1 part each of whole oats and hard red winter wheat, plus a very small amt of chia and fennel. They get it once a day, and eat their Kalmbach's Flock Maker (all-flock) the rest of the day. The hens have a dish of oyster shell.
