I got into this whole chicken thing last spring. Started with 9 chicks bought at local store. Now we have 17 hens, 1 rooster, and we are in the middle of a successful hatch using our new Hovabator that was suggested on this site. I say thank you because me, my wife, and 3 kids all have a ton of fun with our chickens. I have now become the guy that answers chicken questions for others just getting in to it and all of the answers I give them came from this site. (I still have to refer them to this site for a lot of things that I have yet to experience.) I knew zero about chickens 1 year ago and now they are actually more a part of our everyday life than I ever thought they could be. We have many animals but none that I enjoy more than our birds.
My seven year old went to school and told everyone that she is a mother, since we started hatching yesterday. Her teacher was shocked and then called to tell me because she thought it was so funny.
Anyways, thanks for all your posts and help. These birds really are a fun hobby for our whole family and at least two other families because of what we have told them.

I know how you feel- the girls all have uniques names that go with their personalities. They are more than chickens, they're pets and part of the family.
