I’ve found so many helpful posts here, I wanted to join so that I might be able to help other people who might benefit from what I have learned, and what I will be learning in the future!
I have had 5 Welsh Harlequin Ducks (1 drake and 4 hens), along w 4 Khaki Campbell hens, for about 4.5 years. I finally broke down and bought an incubator this year, as egg laying has been on an expected decline...
I pulled the largest and most clean eggs for about 10 days, stored them as recommended on several posts here, and only 4 looked viable at the 1 week check. Only one hatched, and I was happy that it was a baby WH hen. I had ordered 15 turkeys from Murray McMurray hatchery and timed my duck hatch up w the Turkey hatch as a back up plan. I was unable to find any other like aged ducklings locally, so the duckling is in w the turkeys for the moment.
I had three turkeys that were lost in shipping but the hatchery was fabulous to work with and everyone else is super healthy and happy. 4 bourbon reds and 8 Holland whites, I lost 1 Holland white and both of the chocolates
I later found a few young Welsh Harlequin ducks a few weeks older than the baby duck - and brought them home. But introductions, slow as they were, did not go well. So...the little lady continues to try to “peep” like the turkeys and is very happy w them for the time being. She will have to sort it out soon, as they are about 7 weeks old at this point.
I am trying to finish pulling fencing for the Turkey run; we typically free range the kids when we are home and keep them in their “yard” if we have to be away.
I am very hopeful that I’ll be able to keep the turkeys in the yard by clipping a wing... but. We shall see. We have many predators in our rural location so it’s important that they have supervision while out and about.
