I joined Backyard Chicken 2 weeks ago after my hen was mauled by two golden retrievers. We are Americans living in France and we inherited two hens last summer from the previous owner of our house. We have really enjoyed them and their eggs and were even successful in training our own golden retriever not to chase them. However, his two friends were not as well behaved and got ahold of Maggie. Her wounds were pretty serious and it was a holiday here so there were no vet clinics open. I quickly Googled how to help a hurt chicken and Backyard Chickens.com came up with some very helpful threads and advice that most likely saved her life.

After cleaning her wounds and using antiseptic spray, I used superglue and steri-strips to glue her skin back over two large gouges in her back side. (all her feathers were gone already). I applied antibiotic ointment to her wounds twice per day. I also gave her an oral antibiotic daily. She did not move for 2 days and I really thought she would die. We fed her worms and vegetables, and brought water to her regularly. After two days, I made her walk around a bit. After 10 days she left her hen house by herself with her best friend, Marie Pierre, and now they are walking around the yard freely again. It seems like a miracle and I really need to thank everyone for posting their similar stories or else I wouldn't have know what to do. She is not laying eggs anymore, but that is fine with us. We are just glad she is still with us.

Warmest regards,
Cheryl Smith

at times chickens can be amazingly resilient - some of the horrendous wounds they recover from are incredible. The main thing is to keep others from pecking or attacking them, while they heal and to be certain flies don't lay eggs on the wound - the maggots that ensue can kill them quicker than their injury.

You obviously did a great job caring for your hen...so happy she is ok! Welcome to BYC!
