My mom just brilliantly lost one of my quail.

She put it in the wrong cage and it got lose and flew away. Thanks a ton mom. We don't lose animals like this. We lose them to old age and the occasional disease, but not to pure stupidity (yes I'm being mean, I love my mom bunches and tons but that was a seriously dumb move). She was the one that figured out they could get out of that cage too. She didn't even apologize, just said "it's not like I did it intentionally." No duh, but thanks to you that poor thing is going to be eaten alive by some hungry animal or starve or some other uncomfortable death.

I'm hoping that it will hear the others and come back, but I don't think it will. And even if it does I won't be able to catch it by myself. Poor thing.

maybe it'll come back..

On the bright side, If it's not eaten i believe it'll live.. Plenty of animals live without human contact even in the city, especially chickens and birds like that... They lived long before people found them, and they'll live long after.

ETA, maybe... just maybe, you could put a pen out with the other quail on the ground, and another pen right beside it proped up with a stick.. *tie rope/string to the stick, i prefer about 30-50 feet long but you could use whatever you think would be best* eventually if it's like a chicken, it'd walk all around the pen even eventually walking into the proped up pen, when it happens. yank the string/rope.. * it may help, we caught chickens like this all the time that raised themselves on the yard, except we used a pen, feed, and string

Yeah, he might. But I don't even hear him. And he conveniently flew into the coyoto brush that's completely undeveloped for about 5 acres worth of land. I wouldn't have cared as much if he had of slipped out our hands or jumped out of the cage when we opened the lid, but this was a complete lack of common sense thing that shouldn't have happened. His siblings are out in the proper cage, so he can hear and see them. We do have some wild quail moving into the area to nest, maybe he'll buddy up with them. I'd just hate for him to be alone in the wild, I know how social quail are.

my roo cricket flew away into the neighbors woods i thought he was a gonner.....next day took the dog out to potty turned to bring him back in and there just feet away in the snow was cricket eating some blades of grass poked up throught the snow he let me walk right up and grab him. other than some slight frostbite he was fine

Hmm, this sounds familiar. My mom came home for lunch one day and she got an egg out of the pen. One of the females jumped out and she chased it around the tree a few seconds then it flew to the neighboors.

Cody!!

Y'all have some devious quail. Mine just give me the stink eye when I open the cage. They never try to escape. Then again, I think they know the cats are just waiting for them to come out and play.

sorry but no one is as carefull with your animals as yourself.... If you let someone else take care/handle your animals your asking for mistakes. imho

Hey, happy update! I was cleaning my incubator outside when I practically stepped on the escapee! He was running around and then thought "hey, I bet it's a good idea if I run under her feet."

He's not meant to live at this rate. lol. But I caught him and put him in with his friends. He started chirping when he saw them and I can tell he's so relieved to be back with them.
