I just got some chick yesterday and it was almost a disaster. I put a brood lamp over the enclosure but didn't secure it properly. While I was in the house the lamp fell into the shavings and caught them on fire. I lost 8 out of 15 chicks. They were in my laundry room and had some friends not driven up at the right time I could have lost my house. Not an amazing beginning. Anyway the 7 surviving chicks are doing really well. I thank God for my friends and the support that they offered. The chicks were older than expected and I learned they didn't even need a heat lamp. They are eating well. I decided that they are actually pigs with feathers! I have never raised chickens and haven't been around them much since I was on my grandmother's farm and my aunt's farm. I was really taken with them then and am pleased to be raising them now. The chicks were a gift and they are unsexed. I cannot have roosters in the city limits so probably will have to send some of them with friends who raise chickens locally. I feel fortunate to have this group for a reference and have friends who know what to do. I just checked to see if I could put tomatoes in with them and it seems that I can. Again, thanks for sharing all of your experience.
