Thanks for intro space!

Glad to meet you!
Here is my favorite article for starting out chicken keepers!
Best wishes for your birds, and all your plans. I think your kids must enjoy the chickens, too. They are cool and interesting little dinosaurs, aren't they?

To read more about coop construction and predator protection, check out forums and articles. You might also talk to other folks in your area about local conditions of climate and predators. You can also arrange assistance, trades, sales that way.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We started our chicken adventure during the pandemic - through 4H about a year and a half ago

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We started with 12 buff orpingtons and added 2 silkies, and then adopted 2 more silkies looking for a home. We lost one broody silkie hen to a snake :( and lost one of the roosters (didn't mean to get but 1 rooster, and ended up with 3). So our grand total now is 12 hens, 2 roosters.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Buff Orpingtons and 2 silkie roosters

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The zen feeling get when I go and sit with my girls; I had no idea chickens could have such personalities and a few of them are very friendly. The eggs are a bonus!
Yes! They seem like such pacifist, boring creatures until you are around them! They have so much personality and color! Each one is different. :)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We have a garden, so I can a lot; my fam loves to kayak, paddle board, play pingpong, travel, have backyard fires in the pit to make s'mores, hike, camp

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a professional musician and educator, my husband is a fire fighter - we have 2 girls; 4 cats, one hound and one GSD.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I'm pretty sure I was searching a topic online and found answers and posts on the issue. I appreciate normal people answering questions and giving opinions that are different from the online "experts" because sometimes we can't all be perfect and I have a learning curve just like everyone else. I like hearing different perspectives and that there is no one right way to do anything. You have to do what works for you.
Yup! I’ve learned and taught as well! Our expert members are helpful during an emergency too. Welcome to BYC!!
