Yes I would say that you don't have to kill it. Peafowl can make it with one leg, and I even know of a local peafowl breeder that has a free-range hen that has a messed up leg and he just has left her like that. She gets around just fine and is always able to get to the food!

I would say something serious like that, if left untreated, could lead to a hip or other bone deformity though. My gamebird gets along fine with it's leg and a half!

Mine looked just like that. I didn't want to amputate the leg either but I couldn't leave him hobbling about in pain so we euthanised him yesterday. He was not going to be able to have a normal life, ever and that wasn't fair on him.

Peafowl are a heavy bird, and if you look at the other leg it is starting to swell and twist also when we first started raising Peafowl years ago the first one that we hatched like that we kept it about a 1 1/2 years old both legs were twisted and the only way for it to get feed and water was to bring it to him so I put him down. So unless you have lots of time on your hands like I said it sounds cruel but I would put it down she will never get better, sometimes you just have to face the truth and do what is right.

Cutting the leg off for a bird would be like cutting yours off and not giving you a cane or crutch after to help you walk or leaving you with twisted legs and without a wheel chair to get around in.

I would say that the decision is yours on what to do, and no one else.

Agree it is your Decision, just remember peafowl can live 20 years. Do you want to care for a disable bird that long. If you want to remove the leg, take it to a vet.

My vote would be put it down. Peafowl not like other birds that spend alot of time flying. They are ground birds, need those legs to get around.

Oh yes, mine will only fly to the perch to see what I am doing in back of the coop and if I don't come in and sit with them for a while they shout out "HELP!" to me

Maybe I am considered a peahen to my peacock. He has a mate in there but always waits for me to come in. HAHA

She seems fine. In fact, she was sitting above the ledge that we put in the upper part of the cage the other day. Anyways, I never had a fourth? Only 3.

Thinking about amputating a pet's leg at home, without anaesthesia, makes me feel ill. A lot of things can go wrong. In fact, a lot of things can go wrong with at-home euthanasia as well. For the latter, there's a lot of information on BYC for different methods. For the former... I just keep remembering SAW (the movie) and thinking about POW camps in Vietnam. If you can afford to take her to the vet, the bird won't suffer as much either way. Is this the pea that you hatched? Sorry you both have to go through this. Good luck to you both!
