Strongly recommend you NOT sod; there are a number of things you can do to improve drainage, but if you have to add some sort of substrate I would recommend sand or a sand-gravel mix ("road base" is usually the cheapest, for bulk delivery, and all of it that I've encountered has been quite adequate for chicken run purposes)
