I am such a mean dad I let my girls run out of food over night. We are talking they were out from dusk till around 10 am by the time I went to town and back. I was attacked I tell ya, you would think I had piranhas in there. They were trying to rip the bag open before I could get it dumped into the feeder bin. Then it was a pile on for who could eat the most the fastest and dont let my feet get in the way they just piled ontop.

They are so funny when they have been without food for a little while! They do act like it's been days or weeks since they last saw food.

Now I am going to officially scold you and tell you to never let that happen again! Sheesh!

I find that if I mix a bit of scratch in with their feed..the next morning I will find all the feed scattered all over inside the coop due to them trying to pick out all the scratch! No more mixing for me. they are a bunch of pigs now aren't they?

Somewhere I read that if you take away their food feeders for even 30 minutes and then put them back in... they act like you've been holding out on them.

Mine have a full feeder right now, as it almost always is. Today's snacks were spaghetti, grapes, some whole wheat bread, and a couple of apples past their prime. Plus, they've been free-ranging all day.
After not going out there for about two hours I just took them their daily scratch and was mobbed. Chickens don't have full buttons.

They are such little spoiled turds, these chickens.
I have been putting the feeders up at night because
I discovered rats were feasting during the night.
I did leave the waterer out, but I put in minerals that
are not good for rats but great for the chickens.

I now have a few traps about the barn that the chickies
can not be harmed by. We will see what we will see.

Oh wait, my roo is calling the hens in, I have to go.

edit:

OK I am back. The barn is closed up and now the flock can eat ant drink before they
go nite nite without any problems.

Anywho, You would think i am treating them like dirt !! They hoard the feeders when I bring them down and now I am forced to expand the scratch thrown on the floor of the barn.

I darn near can not get of the way !!

LOL, they are funny, always acting like they're starving. My BO stands by the back door and does this loud moaning.

If I move my feeder 5 feet, they all come running like it was a new snack or something. But if I move their waterer 5 feet, they can't find it.
