That's it, I need NEST BOX PLANS

The simplicity of using 5 gal buckets sounds great! I recently got 4 free, with lids, from a large chain grocery store in our area. I just asked at the bakery if they had any... at the time they didn't but they took my name and how many I wanted and had them ready when I went back a few days later. I turned one into a feeder thanks to a pic I saw on BYC!

Hello out there, does anybody know how to build a nest box so the hens don’t roost on them at night and crap where the eggs are?

Here's mine. I'm not finished with the coop, and I just got my first egg today, underneath my nest boxes. But the girls seem to be getting VERY interested in their boxes.

I used an old base kitchen cabinet, door removed, flipped on its side, screwed into studs. I screwed a 1x2 along the edge of the openings to keep the bedding in, and attached a perch directly in front of the nestboxes. The cabinets come a few different sizes, and are usually pretty easy to find on craigslist for free.

I placed the nestbox underneath my roosts and droppings board, an idea I got from DDawn and Patsandchickens. If the droppings board extends beyond the nestboxes adequately, you won't get any droppings in your boxes.

Here is a pic:

I used what I had as well, rather then build nest boxes. All 8 hens are laying and all five nest boxes get used.

My roost is much higher on the other side of the coop. So mine have never roosted on or in the nest boxes.

This was their stock tank brooder turned on it's side sitting on buckets with two cat boxes and plastic tub I had.

This sits next to the stock tank closest to the coop door. It's the banty brooder I built on a pallet. To use as nest box, I turned it on it's side, put in divider in the middle and board/lip on the front to keep the shavings in. My broody 28 wk old BR has been sitting in the one on the right going on 2 wks.
