That's it, next time I'm just asking you guys.

I really need to question the feed store about who they use. I'm guessing if there's one out here it's not in the yellow pages. I just can't be bothered with people clearly in it for the profit anymore. I don't even think he really got much loving treatment. They had me hold him the entire time for them because he was covered in yuck

*sigh*

i would definatly make the effort to find out who the feedstore uses cause it sounds like that vet is only still in buisness cause its the only one in town...
the way you describe the place i wouldnt return either!

i try and do most of my stuff at home, i do all my own vacinations whenever possible, i use the low cost clinics for rabies because in this state you cant do the rabies vac yourself, everything else i look to see if theres a human or farm otc that i can use...
i just convinced my family to switch to using 1% ivermectin for the dogs because heartguard was costing us a small fortune...

and its ashame because a vet SHOULD be a trusted resource, not someone yhou begrudge even calling to ask a question...

hope your kitty feels better soon.

I don't know about giving dogs ivermectin but I know they make horse wormer out of fenbendazole and dog wormer so that should be ok just obviously make sure the right dose for a dog.

I like the vet that I most recently went to, but they didn't even give me an itemized bill. A rabies shot plus some meds for an ear yeast infection cost me like $140 and I'm not even sure what cost what...... I don't mind paying when I HAVE to, but I'd kinda like to know how much they charged for each thing. Kinda sounds like they don't want me to know

At least with thtis particular vet they will talk to you on the phone some.

But yeah, 99% of stuff I do at home too and BETTER than they do for me at the vets anyway. The main reason for taking him in that time was because he was brand new to the family we needed to get him "in the system" and I had no idea how current his Rabies shot was...now if we have an emergency we won't be treated like aliens

I ask up front. My vet knows finances dictate what I can afford to have done on my animals. For regular visits I take multiple animals for a discount. But I ask for prices about meds and request prescriptions. Actually I dont anymore because our vet matches online prices so people will buy from him. He is usually within a buck or two.

I know its not going to help this time. I do think that computer fee is a bit sleezy.

I had two dogs Mom and 8wk pup in last week. Rabies shot for Mom, Booster DA2PP-C and lepto for both Mom and baby, Prophymonas for Mom, Interceptor for baby, and HW blood test that checks for Lyme, HW, etc for Mom plus tag (for Mom)....... $91 plus he gave me a free bag of dog food for the puppy.

Of course we spend a small fortune at our vet for dogs, puppies, goats, cats, chickens, and anything else that crosses our path. This is such a wonderful clinic that has taken care of our pets and livestock since I was a kid an that was almost 50ys ago. I love our vets. Wise and experienced with every animal species in the rural country. The older man retired last fall, and now the younger vet is there. It's still a great place.

It's funny because I ATTEMPTED to do this. To work with them. But they just... think of it as going to get your car looked at because of a rattling noise. You ask for an estimate over the phone of how much it would be to bring in to look at. Only one in town, car rattling might be worrysome so you go and when you arrive you make it clear you're strapped for cash. They come out and tell you they replaced the tires and put some oil in the car to hush the rattling "for now" and now you owe them for the check, the cost of tires, and the oil they put in which is perceived as a band-aid to the actual issue. I feel violated in a way because though they gave him meds for the URI - he has had URI issues his entire life. Off and on. And I was /hoping/ to figure out why and "fix it" once and for all. He didn't always have them but he got them enough it made me worry that perhaps something else was causing it to happen. He'd get a URI at least once a year and it'd vanish as quickly as it presented itself on homeopathic meds alone. They were mild. Non life threatening, and I wondered if he was allergic to something more than anything. They wouldn't really even look at him. Just took his temp, listened to me gripe about him sneezing a lot and then sprung antibiotics on me and eye ointment I can't even use on him because hes a BIG strong cat.

Would YOU want to stick ointment in THAT things eye unless absolutely necessary? He's even got extra claws to scratch you with.

My 10 yr old Jack, Lucy had to go yesterday, it was over $100, she has bronchitis. 1 shot and 2 prescriptions later. She did sleep much better last night and only coughed twice. Had I known what she had, I probably could have called my large animal vet and she could have given me dosage for OTC meds and it would have been cheaper. At least my small animal vet work with me. I need to make the appt to take all 5 in and get Heart Worm tests, he is giving me a "group" rate and then will figure out ivermectin dosage for each dog so I can have them on HW prevention that is affordable.
