So the chicks had another day in the run Sunday, spent a lot of time in there. I thought we had the coop ready for them - I don't want them to have overnight access to the run until the whole wire apron is down, but the coop should be secure. And they say you're supposed to lock them into the coop alone for several days to get them to know it. But @Purple Rose wasn't sure about putting them out just yet.

This evening, she found one of Cera's feathers out - not one of the small little fluffy bits, but one of the big new ones. I thought that going back into the tight space of the brooder was probably starting behavioral issues and they were pulling each other's feathers, from what I read, and that we should put them out in the coop.

So we have. They're out there with bedding, food and water, and the door latch has a carabiner. All the windows have the .5" hardware cloth. The pop door is latched shut from the run side.

They ought to be ok... right?

Right now I'm trying to decide whether checking on them in the wee hours would be too disruptive, and whether I should put a small night light in there for them.

How old ar they and what is the tempature tonight where you are?

Why do I keep forgetting to put age in posts? Sigh, upset teenager earlier got to me.

They're 4 1/2 weeks, and it's 79 right now going down to 72.

This is them exploring the run the other day, while we were all out there working on prep stuff.

You're in Texas, right? I think your chickens are about the same age as mine, about a month. I put mine out in the coop about a week ago. They had a heat lamp but we haven't used it for a few days. they are happy out there, and the last two days I have been letting them out in the run for about 4 hours; they've been going up the ramp to go to bed about 7:30 like big girls, so cute to watch.

DH Miles figured out a way to hang his little flashlight by looping the cord through the hardware cloth, so it can point at the ceiling and just give a bit of a glow to the coop. And I picked up all the girls and put them on the roost.

Still feeling nervous.

Yes they are definitely old enuf, and it's definitely warm enuf. I've put 4 week olds out with lows in the upper 30's and they did fine. When I put my first chicks out in coop, first night I set up a baby monitor in there, lol.

I was wanting something like that! I was talking to DH Miles last night about inexpensive wireless cameras for inside the coop - the home security setup has a camera that covers the backyard, so I can look at the outside of the coop.
