The 1st Battle of the Birds Online Show!

hdowen: I'd say so, especially if he got a ribbon at a show. He's got nice, even coloring. What color do you call him?

Popcorn: I can't really tell... Maybe post a lighter pic?

The APA (American Poultry Association) recognizes that color as self blue. Breeders however, like the term lavender. A lavender bird sounds much more exotic then a self blue!

Saying a bird is show quality after it got a ribbon at a show makes perfect sense, however what in life is that simple? For all I know your bird won showmanship at a 4-H meeting, and a mutt can win showmanship. Not all shows have the same expectations.

I do not see how anyone that doesn't personally have experience with D'Uccles could tell you the quality of your bird. I suggest a copy of the Standard of Perfection, and talking to experienced breeders. Perhaps, the D'Uccle thread under breeds, genetics, and showing would be a great help.

As for the question to the quality of the Marans. I do not believe Cuckoo Marans are recognized by the APA, just Black Copper. If they are it would be in the french standard (feathered shanks), so a photo of the whole bird would be more ideal.

I started this show so that I could have more expirience in judging birds for quality. This is practice for me.

My "mutt" did well in 4-H Showmanship at the county fair, which I know is mostly based on me, but he also won a seperate blue ribbon based completely on him.
