Trying to break my broody FBCM. She's a hard head and will sit and wait till someone lays for her. I take eggs, she has a fit and keeps sitting. Then there's my Silver Phoenix hen. She's great at hatching, but not raising chicks. I don't have a lot of the Phoenix eggs and only 2 hens, but I'm seriously thinking I should move her and give her the Phoenix eggs and some FBCM and maybe AMs too. If I can get a little mini hoop coop up tomorrow I just might do that. The FBCM??? No way! Get out of that box!!
Need every egg you can get!!! I have a blue copper that just went to live with the BLue Ameaucana rooster-- should make nice OE's !! Need to set up my second pen of FBCM--never enough eggs from those girls. I sell out of chicks so fast I rarely get to keep more than 1-2 for myself. Crazy!!.. PRetty eggs are worth having though.

CRAP!!! Just figured out I've set all of our eggs so far at least a full day late

I have everything set for an EASTER DAY hatch. OOPS!!! Oh well, guess I better set the quail the same way. So far, I have set 5 duck, 6 bob white/tennessee red quail & 6 chicken. BigPoppy has set 4 Duck, 6 bob white/tennessee red quail & 6 chicken. We still have Coturnix quail to set. Won't have a count on those until we actually set since we are still collecting.

I'm queen of the rooster keepers I think. I always hung out with the guys, so I guess I've carried it over to roosters. But I'm getting better.
Oh no I am just discovering more rooster I thought were hens, thought I had placed all the unwanted roosters. wrong. 5 dinners out there or chicken stew for me and my chihuahuas. I think 75% of these EEs and Ameruacanas are roosters. Or I lose the pullet at point of lay.

I sold most of my breeders last month, but some of my younger ones are laying now. Just not very many yet. I just had a bunch hatch 2 days ago. I forgot about them and I had quail all over the place. Had to scoop them all out of racls in the Sportsman. But I'm getting a couple here and their, so I'll be setting some Cots too.

OK speaking of quail. I've been trying to load a pic of an egg I found from a Marans. It was cracked and sitting right next to another egg in the same spot on the patio. My girls will only use 2 of the nest boxes, so instead of just using an empty one with clean fluffy shavings, they fight and even poop on eachother to get in one of those 2 boxes. One has the hen that is trying to collect eggs to hatch for herself. So, when the higher ups are in or waiting for a box, these goofy girls will lay in the dirt, on a brick, on the patio!!! Where ever. I'm trying to get this darn pic to load, but don't think it's going to happen. Anyway, it's the size of a Coturnix egg! I couldn't figure out what it was then picked it up and though, man that's a dark quail egg, but the quail are penned!

OH I did it! It was a perfect little egg, other then them cracking it.

Ok, we set our eggs at noon, right on schedule, in our still air incubator. Had a couple empty holes in the egg turner sooo went to the coop to see if the girls had laid yet...well it would seem (and we will verify tomorrow...) that one of our black copper marans has gone broody! My question(s)...can or should we take some eggs out of the incubator to place under her? If so when? And another biggie...the boxes are pretty high off the ground sooo can we move her and the eggs to a ground level bucket with shavings?...the best place I think will be in our original little coop, but we recently put a speckled sussex pair in there thinking to get a few fertile eggs to hatch out maybe starting next week in an older incubator...should we give up on that? Or can the broody be in with the pair? I know that having momma hen raise the babies is easier...but also nervous about putting the shipped eggs under her...should we just stick to our own flock's eggs? Ugghh decisions! Help!
Eggs in the incubator
15 crested cream legbars (shipped)
15 blue laced red wyandotte (shipped)
2 marans(hen) X ameraucana(roo)
2 speckled sussex
1 ameraucana
3 easter eggers
1 buckeye(hen) X ameraucana(roo)
ok...I know the last one is odd but she is one of our laying flock in with the protector extrordinaire ameraucana so we included her egg...sooo total set =39...can't hardly wait for lockdown!!
I don't trust broodies. Especially shipped eggs. I've been try to win the bet on those crested cream legbars they don't come cheap. LOL did you win the bid on my eggs. Now one have to wait another 21 day bator full.....

Seems like I am a day late for this but I set 41 eggs today. I have a mix of LF bbs Orps, EEs and EE over BCM. This is my first ever attempt at hatching.

If you don't mind I will follow along since I should just be a day later on my hatch if I have any to hatch that is.

That..~ is one good lookin dog in your avatar..is a pure something..love it!

Good luck on your very first hatch!

Anyone out there from Australia that knows anyone with fertile quail eggs??? Who can get them in overnight?

I was going to pick up new eggs today but the people we reserved eggs with 2 weeks ago, told us today they didn't have any fertile eggs as we were driving down to go pick them up...
