All the breeds I have are in my signature. The only ones laying right now are the Blue/Barred Rocks. The chicks from them are so pretty too. Living on 10 acres helps with having a lot of chickens too...LOL.Oh my, that is a lot of chickens. I cant imagine having that many at once and still wanting more... Ok Maybe I can. I think Tom would Knock me in the head if I went to far over 12 long-term resident chickens here and we are already at 6. What kind of chicks are you raising up? I'm happy the big girls are laying again we went most of this winter getting 1/egg a MONTH out of four <1 year old chickens... Boo my Orpington just started laying again this week and hopefully they will all start up again!

practice on local eggs if you canOooooh I so wanna join! My first ever eggs were set on feb 2nd but almost all of my expensive Coronation Sussex eggs are duds so I'm looking for something else. March 9th sounds just about right for attempt #2.
you have 6 vacancies?
Roosters dont count. 36 eggs is a minimum to hatch. you have to factor in hatch rates, cockerels, potential losses to predators. I would hatch 48 just to be sure - I got an A in chicken math.
perhaps there is a reason for feeling silly.I may have some assistance with this Easter Hatch; the silkie hen I picked up not quite two weeks ago appears to be going broody. She's laid an egg every other day and a couple two days in a row but I took them until yesterday's. No broody behavior at all until today. She's sitting on two unfertilized eggs in the brooder box. I got fluffed and squawked at when I checked...
So if she keeps this up another full day, I will replace her eggs with some from the flock to see how she does.
Oh...her former people named her Sparkle, she's a year old, and I hadn't intended to integrate her with the flock. She's my house silkie. (I still feel silly saying that.)
Ow! It is what it is.perhaps there is a reason for feeling silly.![]()
