I almost had a loss this week but fortunately she is doing well now. Is it okay to post pics? Some could be graphic to some people. It was an accident that the vet said happens rarely when the rooster breeds the hens. He cut her with his spur and each time he bred her he kept cutting her. It had made it all the way to her air sac before I found it and the only reason/way I found it was when I went to put a saddle on her because her back was looking bald. It was horrible. She will be isolated from the flock (we have a small medic house) and be on antibiotics for 14 days.

This is PS after surgery & you can't see the stitches.

Is it okay to post pics of the stitches or would it be better to make a folder on my profile if people wanted to see?

Behind in posts..just looked at this, so happy she is doing better! That was pretty bad! She's lucky she has you watching over her, and not just a rooster!

Is there a consolation prize for worst hatch rate? I just candled and all my eggs save one are infertile

I'm so bummed. Apparently I'm just not meant to have Marans, and to just keep blowing money for no reason

.

That's tough I know. I went through that when I was trying for Showgirls. And, I was ordering OE eggs to get my Olive Egg..thought, that would be easy, but I kept getting eggs that were NOT the real OE color. But this year, I have gotten some real pretty eggs, and now, I just have to wait for the babies to grow. :) It can happen...but not it you don't get any to hatch. Hope your one little one hatches! And, it's a girl. :D

I pegged it right when you posted your pic days ago- totally Bielefelders. You PM me if you have any to get rid of, even if it's just a spare roo.

I will keep you posted. I am definitely keeping at least a trio, and my husbands work friend will get a few, but that does leave us with some spare boys. I have never shipped live poultry before though so i would need a walkthrough haha.

My second chick made it through the night! Her eyes are open and she's moving more, AND screaming away for all the world to hear. I'll get pictures later when she's up on her feet. Mama was off the nest this morning and showing the first chick how to eat

Oh Red, I'm so happy for you!

well I had a mircale hatch today
big_smile.png
on day 14 I candled eggs and accidently broke one(craked the shell at the top), in an effort to save the developing chick, I dampened a piece of paper towel and smoothed it over the egg, in the bator the paper towel dried slightly and stuck to the egg nicely. today day 23. the egg finally hatched and a healthy baby cochin is now chirpping away in the bator

I have a couple of pictures of one chick with mama, and then a video of the same thing.

You can hear a LOT of chirping in the video...........guess who it's from? Nope, not the chick eating. It's the newer one under mom!

Thing better work this time *fist shake*
Edit: GAHHH! Curse you, youtube!!

DL:
Aww, the mama looks so good Red. For just having sat so long, she looks great. I hatched that mama here at home. I'm so glad you have her. You take great care of your chickens. I got the eggs from DMRippy. I had a great hatch with those eggs. A lot of folks are enjoying chickens that look a lot like that girl right there. My DH named the one I kept, Echo. Not sure where that came from..lol.. ??

One of my two chicks is dead. Somehow, the Icelandics pulled it through the cage it was in with the broody and tore it apart, then started eating it. I thought that cage was safe

Why do chickens eat live young?!

That is so sad.

I'm sorry.
