Okay, now I've got it! That's a relief to know. The first pic is a prize winner, BTW. Guess you can't enter the cutest chick contest??

I candled my eggs in the incubator around 5am this morning, since light comes through the windows later in the day. There were two more eggs that I removed - had started to develop but had obviously quit. The embryos were quite small and the eggs had hardly any veins. That makes 6 I've removed so far, but I haven't candled the ones under the broodies for the last time yet. I've gotta wait until it's dark outside, but we're leaving the house before it gets dark and getting home late. But, according the last candling, they were about a day behind the others, so it won't matter too much.
I took the eggs out of the auto turner, and put them on their side in dollar store drawer organizers. The humidity hasn't gone above 50% yet. That's with both trays on the bottom filled, and a sponge in a water-filled glass jar. Like others have said, the temp isn't as high as it was before, but I'm not worrying about that.

When I was moving the eggs to their hatching containers, I heard a little "cheep, cheep"! I think my dog heard it too, because he started sniffing around the living room.

I set up the homemade hover brooder that I used last year, in front of the broody hen crates. My hope is that the extra chicks that don't fit under the broodies can get warmed by the heat lamp, but still be "adopted" by the broodies. I'm pretty sure Daisy will sign up for as many chicks as she can handle, because she was a 5-star mother last year. I'll just have to wait and see.

Looking forward to the next couple days!

Oh wow, more losses! How sad. Sorry to you both!
Things seem to be stabilized here for lockdown now. Can't wait to see some rocking! Coming to the hardest part of all. I'm going to TRY to be more relaxed with this hatch & not drive everybody around me crazy! 12/20 set & waiting....
Best of luck to everybody!

Quote: I didn't know that about waterfowl. That works out perfectly for me since I'm not locking down yet. My air cells just aren't up to par.

Tyson starts acting crazy when they start pipping since he's in the same room as the bator.

For the member that wanted to see my incubator set up for lockdown, here it is. They were already locked down, so I got pictures through the glass. Didn't have a chance to get more shelf liner.

16 Barnevelder eggs. (13 pure, 3 blue) The one in the upper right with the X on it I think is a quitter, but not positive enough to take it out.

3 welsummers (post office was not kind to these) and 1 black sex link (welsummer roo over BR hen)

Barnevelder egg from a different line that I want to band and keep track of how it grows out.

21 eggs in all for hatching.

Me, I was wondering what you did the lone egg for..guess it's to know that breed and band it..I think that's what you said? Is that the strawberry container? :p Anyway, must tell you...love your little roo crowing. How cute is that? I had one crow at about two weeks old..but 4 days? Going to be a big deal in that yard!

Hatching tip:

Don't worry about a lower temperature in these last few days. Temperature is not as important now because the chick is finished developing.

Happy Chooks please don't get offended, but this is simply not true. Had I not researched I would have never known this info...... paste from a clinical study, and yes I read a lot lol

The small intestine enlarged their absorption surface area by 5 fold during last 6 days of incubation, enterocyte number increases. Goblet cells which produce acidic mucin appears and the tissue develop quickly abilities of digestion and absorption. Changes in incubation conditions (temperature/ oxygen/ ventilation) affect these physiological processes and lead to changes in the intestine development and in the quality of hatchlings.

It home with the vitamins and the wry neck chick is perfect .... It seems to have more energy than any other! Both assisted chicks are perfect ( my little miracle babies)

See....?

The chick who spent the day in the cup is now walking around eating and drinking and staying upright. (See for yourself!)

I lost the silkie though :(

Now If I could only figure out how to help this one that flops around on its tummy helicoptering its legs and using its wings to move.... Any ideas?
