Think I found out what happened.

I had 3 birds that laid eggs in a really wet area. I let those eggs dry out and then set them with all of the others. I just found one that was almost completely mildewed and when I opened it it was the same way inside. Pretty sure it was one of those eggs, since I didn't have many OEs in there.

I have 2 more hatches set in the Sportsman. I'm going to transfer all of those eggs and clean really well and spray the whole incubator with Oxine. Hope it isn't to late to save the hatches. I have about 100 more eggs backed up now, so time to clean and set some that may have a better chance. I've never seen anything like this. The chick that pipped is DIS and there is green ????? inside of the shell. I feel like a chick murderer. I was really suspisous when the quail didn't hatch. They hatch even if I forget about them. Now I have to go sterilize all 2 incubators, which I would have anyway, and go for a normal hatch.

Never has failed in these big hatches. hmmm

This is what I ended up with after a sucessful weekend

I have two chicks out, and two eggs still in the incubator.
checking in for "aoberkotter" she has one egg who is pipped backwards (small end) so we will keep an eye on him and assist if needed.

Sorry to hear about the failed eggs wolftracks. I did not know eggs mildewed, I won't forget. I hope the next two hatches go without a hitch for you. A 100 eggs that is a lot. How long have you been hatching eggs. Someday we will want to do the same.

Well we are now at for March hatches, Cochin 4 out of 4, incubator 4 out of 12. March hatches total 8
Today April 1, two hatched 6 left in the incubator. Chicks are almost dry 30 minutes will put in the warm brooder.

How many of you once the chicks are dry introduce water and chick food or let them go the two or three days and ingest the yolk before introducing food? I am just wondering. Good luck wolftracks.

Duckies are still hatching left and right! but Ak what is up with this guy?

I'm working and have my helper at home taking these pictures so I don't have specifics, but it seems to be a mass stuck to the top of his head - and it seems like it is attached.

A long time, but I've been in a different area since 4 years ago, so things here have had to be adjusted.

Depending on how many I have going and how long between chicks, I have food and water ready and scoop out the dry ones and get them started. If they were going to be shipped I wouldn't do that, cause once they start eating, they don't want to stop. LOL

If you have a good, stoopid-proof incubator (Brinsea, for example, with the auto turn cradle and humidity pump) you can do what I did: set and forget. That's what I did, honestly. Well, I didn't really "forget" but I only candled ONCE and just three of the 24 eggs i set. When I saw development in two of them, I was done candling.

At lockdown, I didn't candle, just raised the humidity and unplugged the turner.

15 out of 23 eggs hatched.

I've never heard of an egg doing what that one did. It even had a chick that was almost full term. IDK what it is about my luck and the big hatches.

your cat looks very nice, I have chihuahua that look so contend to just look at the chickies. But I see a lip smacking in their evil little eyes. I think if I wasn't there they would have chicky dinner for sure.
