My Dark Cornish, Eleanor, is trying to go broody... she sits in the nest box all puffy, bites me when I try to pet her (she NEVER does that... )... and keeps standing up looking underneath her then getting all irritated when nothing is there... LOL...

She's never done this before, and she's not really sticking with it for more than a day at a time, but I think I'll get her some eggs if she decides to stick to it...

I have a bunch of striped "chipmunk" ones and they are my favorites! I also have quite a few with adorable muffs.

Here's some more photos for you all to enjoy!

The first chick to hatch was a chipmunk, and I thought it had a "blue" hue to some of his stripes. Sure enough, it's little wing tips are blue & brown!
I can't image what it'll look like once feathered out!

Chick on left is a "blue" and yellow - it's wing tips look a lavender chick!
The one in the middle is I think a Partridge Rock/Golden Laced Wyandotte mix
The one on the right is the same chick as above

Here is Daisy with a bunch of the chicks; Lydia is under the hover brooder with the others

I just love this photo!

Daisy moved, and these chicks were left behind!

These last two photos were the ones I entered in the Easter chick photo contest:

I love seeing pictures of babies with their mama.

I wish that one of mine would go broody. This past winter I found my barred rock in the nest box sitting on the eggs. It was in the evening so she was not laying and she never sleeps in the nest box. She looked just like a broody and was arranging the shavings in the nest box. I took an egg out from under her and then put it back next to her just to see what she would do. She quickly tucked it back under and arranged the shavings again. I got excited and run inside to get online to look for hatching eggs. By the next day she was gone. Just teasing me I guess.

Or she wanted a nice warm nest box to sleep in that night instead of the roosts. Sneaky little girl. lol

I hope that Eleanor hatches you some babies!

This was an extremely difficult contest for us to judge.
So many fantastic pictures! It was extremely close, but we had to pick only one.
And the winning picture of the Cutest Baby Fowl Picture Contest is.....

Congrats! A great photo

I'm one of those late hatchers - its my first time round and I'm using an LG incubator, I'm betting that my temps were low through incubation and that's what the delay is. I went out and bought a second incubator (another LG - but they are only $35 at TSC) to start my next eggsperiment! haha I'm hooked before my first hatch has even finished!

Me too! I have an LG and just had my first chick hatch this morning. There are 3 more eggs in there and I'm just going to leave them alone until friday. I'm wanting to set for the cinco de mayo turkey hatch-a-long so they have to come out of there sometime. Before I do that I'm moving the bator into the bathroom, I feel like the temperature and humidity will be more stable and easier to control in there.

well my hubby says that between my two hatches and the chicks we still have from the hatchery, I have to get rid of some (esp since I set one last batch of eggs - trying to get some offspring from some of my smaller hens that weren't laying when it was still frozen out). So I have chicks for sale. No idea who I'm going to find to buy baby bantam EEs in or near the city. I've got them posted everywhere. I really don't want to give up any of the babies I've hatched, and I have a few chicks from the hatchery picked out to add variety, so I guess I'll have to keep trying to sell the remaining 15 chicks so he doesn't get too ticked when my next hatch happens in a couple weeks. Maybe one of the places that sells locally by the chick will help me (consignment?)

And hubby says that my plastic tote brooders have to go out into the main coop or the shed tomorrow cause these babies are stinking up the place. I guess I love them too much, I don't really smell it (and I keep the door closed and the window propped open in the room they are in). Guess it was only a matter of time before they had to move out of the house anyways. Should be able to keep them warm enough with these brooders (they are almost too warm here in the house which is why I have the window open and the lights propped way above them. Any one else's spouse not really appreciate your little bundles of fluff? Guess he thinks I have too many animals already (10 hens, 4 roos, 3 dwarf rabbits, a kitty, a puppy and his dog and his fish tank). It's my own personal zoo - right? I love them all.

Anyone got ideas for introducing your new babies to an existing flock? I know I have to find new homes for the roos first - they are just too rambunctious. I think two of my hens will probably try to foster the chicks - they are really broody (one is a buff wheaton bantam cochin and the other some sort of barnyard mix of black bantam polish and cochin.) In fact, when collecting the eggs today the buff wheaton (whom I affectionately call B*tchy Hen) was sitting on a whole clutch and was really mad when I tried to take them. I rolled them out from under her and began to pick them up, but she was faster than me and rolled two back underneath. That sneaky little broody. I reminded her that "daddy" (my hubs) was not about to allow her to hatch any since he has already said that the ones in the bator are the last ones for this year. And cause the roos would probably stomp the offspring or they would fall out of the nest box to certain death (it's about 8" off the ground). Also, anyone have a good idea what age I might introduce these babies to their mothers?

Wish I could give you a real hug. I'd probably be crying, though. You'd have wet shoulders, haha

X's 2. :( We know the feeling don't we Red... Hope that baby chick is doing ok that you got from our friend. :)

So an update on the whole egg snafu on Ebay: Ebay was VERY interested to know that a seller was soliciting money outside of auctions. I hope the seller enjoys what my 30 dollars bought them.

Cheaters never prosper.

My little white silkie with the hurt foot and had a rough start being stuck in its egg passed today

he/she is so tiny when I get home from anywhere I look for it first. Sadly it was laying on its stomach and almost looked flattened

I'm kind of a little relieved for this baby only because I knew something was off about him/her and I believe he/she was in pain. My other 13 babies are growing so quickly and seem healthy, I hope this will be my last loss. I have 8 eggs in the bator but not 100% sure they will take, I believe I'm going to order some more soon. Just a dozen, still looking at breeds and things but I am still happy with my 13.

I'm sorry
