Thanks for all the info and concern. Turns out the egg is a dud anyways. I guess the momma goose had rolled it out of nest. Her others have hatched. So I candled to see and it has a blood ring:( so its trashed. But in another note a gave a wellsummer rooster I hatched on NYD hatch a long to a guy that wanted for his granddaughter. She has a young pullet about same age. She was excited. I was going to sell it to him but after he told me it was for her and see her light up seeing him. I told him I know you will take good care of him. So just take him home. :) Make me feel good to know I made her day.

Have two incubators 1 is an lg and the other is a homemade one from styrofoam shipping box both I use an Incu kit dc works great.

Just wanted to share that I picked up my 12 Good Shepherd Barred Rock / Blue Plymouth Rock Hatching eggs donated by Brookhavens for the Natural Egg Photo contest! The eggs were all in perfect condition, packed safely in rolls of bubble wrap and double boxed. THANK YOU Brookhavens for donating them!

Really hoping at least some of them hatch! Air cells look good with a quick candling. They are resting now and will go in the incubator along with some more EE and Delaware eggs from our local flock. (The shipped eggs will be in a carton un-turned for a few days). Praying that I will get much better results from this hatch!

  • P.S. I DID find out the most likely reason my last hatch failed... a faulty thermometer.

The new digital probe Thermo/Hygro that I had bought exclusively for the hatch on E-bay SEEMED to be matching perfectly with accurate thermometers OUTSIDE of the incubator, and I thought I had tested it against a medical thermometer, but I could never calibrate it properly because of the hygrometer being on the probe. Well, after purchasing a NEW digital probe that is just a thermometer (indoor/outdoor) and calibrating that one perfectly in ice water, I realized that the other digital Thermo/Hygro was reading 2 degrees Fahrenheit LOW inside the Incubator!!!!! So when it went up to 101 or 102 for a while at the top of the eggs, and I thought it was ok... Poor little chickies... they didn't have a chance.

So glad I found this new thermometer and was able to calibrate it properly!!!

I am so glad that you have more eggs to hatch! I hope that your hatch rate is better this time!

I hatched 10 barred rock chicks out of 12 eggs for this hatchalong and I do believe 6 or 7 of them are roos also. So the rooster fairy was busy last month!

Had to clean out a bigger Rubbermaid bin to hold the Easter Hatch chicks; they are reveling in the larger space.

Won't be too long before I have to clean out a mini-coop with attached run for their integration/segregation period. (Ducks have been laying in it but not setting, I discovered today. Hadn't checked it in a while so I'm depressed about having to chuck the eggs. I am not willing to open any of 'em!)
