The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

This is my little sick* girl and her hatch mate behind her. Shes so tiny now! I feel so bad about what happened!


And a question on top of this... Why are my 3 week old so filthy. I keep their brooder clean. Change the bedding every 1-2 days and they still seem to get poo all over each other. They are very messy babies and I dont want to wash them cause i dont want to give them a chill.

Well, it had been 24 hours and the membranes were looking awful. I decided to intervene. When I looked at the first pip, it appears dead, no visible movement or breathing. I made it's pip hole slightly more air permeable and put it back in there, just in cast, but the beak isn't moving.

The second pipper I assisted and s/he is running around the incubator chirping up a storm and playing football.

There is a third pip, which I rotated so that it is facing up off the floor a bit. It's still wiggling. I didn't mess with it as I think it happened today and it did not seem distressed.

Did I do wrong? Second pip was not making any progress and the membrane was very leathery. Here's hoping the assisted chick and the third pip make it. It would be really cool if I were wrong about the first pip.

If the membrane is rubbery, the chick will not make it out without assistance. I helped one hatch last week and it is doing great. I assisted another one today because it was sounding very distressed and had been pipped over 24 hours. It finished the hatch alone and is now snuggled up under the eco-brooder.

2 black Australorps, 2 blue Australorps, and one that is hard to determine because it hasn't dried yet.

This chick is taking forever!  The membrane has turned brown where it first pipped.  I believe the first one to pip has died.  The membrane in the hole where it pipped has turned dark brown and there hasn't been any activity since yesterday evening.  GAH!  What am I doing wrong? 

Usually after 6 -7 hours I will help out the chick
