I love that everyone is so welcoming! Thank you to everyone who donated, gave me advice, and helped me get going. i just wanted to share- I revamped my brooder and put the chicks in a 40 gallon bucket. I had shavings down in my cardboard box and when I moved them to the bucket I put a little box with shavings in it, but I just put newspaper under everything else. The chicks seem to find the Walmart add amusing. Maybe it's the ad on the front (that I wasn't paying attention to) for the whole fryers cooked to deliciousness- but they are pecking apart the poor iPad ad. It's actually funny to see them so perplexed by the floor of their new brooder. My boys have been laughing at them for an hour!

Please count me in!

I set my eggs yesterday evening. I picked them up at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Got home a little after 4:00; had them in the incubator by 6:00. I am hatching Crested Cream Legbars - 6 of them in a Little Giant incubator.

Thanks so much, Kestlyn!

I want to join in! I set 12 barnyard mixes Friday at 10pm. I hope it's not too late for me to participate...
6 are Marans x Easter Egger
3 are Easter Egger x Easter Egger
3 are Black Australporp x Easter Egger

I gotta get a phillips screwdriver and open the top, then take this panel off and then take a flathead screwdriver and reach in here and turn the red thingie. pain in the butt

Your eco is digital. That adjustment is for small adjustments or changing for a different breed.

The way it should work is like this:

Get local eggs that hatch well like EE eggs.
Use a spot check or Thermo works thermometer to test the temperature. If it reads close to 99.5, you are good to go
Hatch the EE eggs and do not adjust that red peg.
If the eggs hatch on time and the chicks look healthy, leave the adjustment alone.

Adjust up or down based on what the hatch did and use your good thermometers.

My guess is that the thermometers are flaky.

Okay! My final number for Hatch-A-Long!!!
Total Eggs= 29

4 Silver Pheasant
4 Call Duck
1 Frizzle over Ameracauna
1 Silkie over Silver Hamburg
1 Blk/Brown d'Uccle over Golden Neck d'Uccle
13 Serama

AND

2 Goffins Cockatoo
3 Congo African Grey

Here is my broody Silkie who is on Chicken eggs and a pheasant egg.

And here are the call duck eggs that were in time for the hatch and three of the pheasant eggs. Yeah, I know it's not full! I have to save some space for pheasant eggs....The other small egg is a d'Uccle that should hatch tomorrow..

The Serama eggs are in another incubator..

How not to brooder: chicks were finding ways to fling bits of bedding everywhere, so I think to myself, "hey you, you're smart, you can fix this without reducing ventilation with some nice fix!" I decide on packing taping paper towels to the sides as a bedding-guard and figure they would still let air through so great fix!

But alas, the chicks had a different idea. It. Became. A. Game. They pecked holes in it then began pulling off strips. A few tried to eat their ill gotten gains, so I had to try to grab them them and get those bits while shooing everyone else away from the sides while I pulled the tape and paper towels off. But they are fast and sneaky and it was a losing battle -- I'm sure someone ate a few bites of paper towel. So I hope they ate the chick grit already and digest the bits of paper without issue. Last time I underestimate the inner dinosaur of these guys.

I guess that was their way of asking for chick-friendly veggetainment?

[Hey Sally, did your electric come back on yet? I have been thinking of you and your incubators all day... I hope they get it fixed soon!/SIZE]
