I really need to do something about it, but I'm not sure what I can do because I don't know anyone that would have a dog that is used to being around chickens/ducks enough to let them sit out there with them and I don't really have time to buy a puppy and train it in time to fix the problem. My neighbors even had something get 24 of their chickens in one night about a month ago and they thought it was an owl because there was feathers everywhere and no blood, but now I'm guessing it was probably the same fox that got mine.
I have always worried about cats too because my neighbors five cats think my flower bed is their huge litter bow. I never thought anything other than maybe a cat or a raccoon would be able to get through the fence I have up and luckily I've never had a cat or raccoon problem and yeah I'm guessing a fox is probably too smart for a live trap, but I'm still going to try.So hope those eggs are ok. So sorry..a fox, and I worry about cats! Ferrel cats, had one get one of my HRIR's as a pullet. Caught her in a live trap though. I'm thinking a fox is probably too smart for those ey?
No eggs came today..so, going to count, and take photos of what I have set. Be back!
That is so very awful. So sorry for your chicken and egg loses today. My set number went down to 5.I opened the door to the coop this morning at 6 to let everyone out and then I went back to check on my broody hen at about 9:30 to see if she had left the nest to eat anything. When I got outside I saw feathers everywhere but not blood. I couldn't figure out what happened because everyone was out there that should have been. I went to the coop after the outside head count to check on my hen and something had gotten her and in the process crushed 5 eggs. I grabbed the other five and they were cold. I decided to bring them inside and put them in the incubator even though I don't have much hope that they'll make it. After bringing the eggs inside, I went back outside to clean up the mess in the coop and put all the chickens back in the coop, but when I got there I saw more feathers. I looked around to see who it was this time and in the back of the field behind my house I saw a fox reach the wood line with my favorite rooster in his mouth.![]()
