The 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My birds seems to survive better when the woods are clear  of undser brush and they can see far away-- sptooting the coyote before it gets too close and they can send out the warning call.  Hens tha jump over the fence get eaten .  :/

Netting over the run is next. I started it yesterday but need another roll. We have had 1 turkey hen try her wings but she only got as far as the duck fence before the kids ran her back in the gate. I only have chicken wire around the bottom. It's really just to keep them from wandering in the woods or neighbor's yard. I'm not overly concerned with daytime predators. I lock them up at night, so no real concern there either.

You forgot the turkeys & geese...lol
All of my birds get locked in the shed at night, chickens & turkeys up top, ducks & geese down below. We have coyotes, fox, raccoons & possum for sure, but I worry more about the neighbors' dogs & cats. I would let them free range if ir weren't for the domestic critters on both sides.

And yes, nothing but a gully & woods behind me, a partially cleared lit backed by more woods in front, but neighbors on both sides. We are on a almost 1/2 mile driveway shared by 9 houses. Only 3 are further back the lane than me.

You need a Great Pyrenees or an english shepard

What ever works for you. Trial and error, trial and success!!

I think they would eat to much for a trial if theydont eat the flys. Id love to have a pair just for fun but i wouldnt like the food bill

I have a husky/rottie mix who is chained out during the day & sleeps in the garage at night. She is plenty. She was actually supposed to leave with my ex, but again, I get stuck with the bill. :hmm

I'm beginning to think that my guess in the number of eggs contest for this hatch along might have been too small.

This hatch along is a big deal!
Rules are ont he firt page-- this morning I read we can change our guess.

I suspect one of my hatchlings died/drowned in the shell. I took out the one live chick from the incubator today, and one of the two remaining eggs was stuck to the bottom of the incubator. I took it off and there was a pip hole, but there was no movement from the little beak sticking out, and it looked like it had been there for a while. It pipped on bottom instead of on top.

I must have candled wrong or something.

Should I try to work it out of the shell, or is it dead for sure?

Read the guide to assisted hatching in my signature file.

first though, make sure the chick is a live and breathing. You can gently crack the egg near the hole.

Yesterday I posted a list of things to have ready for hatching and one of them was tweezers and Q tips. The Tweezers are used to carefully remove the shell and membrane around the beak.

There is hope if you see the beak.

I do see the beak, but it isn't moving or making any noises. It was face down when I noticed it. Do you think there's a chance it might be alive!? I think it must have been that way for a while.
I have read the assisted hatch, it's really detailed and good, I think I could do it, I do have the tweezers and q-tips ready.

Good then!

Open up around the beak to see if the chick is still alive.

Best!
