The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

My test hatch eggs are pipping, all 7 made it to lockdown!

They were refrigerated so I wasn't expecting them ALL to start developing, told my parents that probably only 3 would hatch... haven't told them yet that all 7 are alive

Awesome!!! :ya

So to go with the 20 something eggs still in the bator my husband brought me home 10 red sex links! And he said he ordered a couple of white leghorns and New Hampshire reds (I think is what he said)! So I had to get started on a bigger brooder. I had some old plywood laying around so made a 4x4 box that is 2ft high. It's in the garage and since it's starting to turn spring here I don't think they will get to drafty. I made it big enough so when I have the newer chicks I can slide a piece in the middle and have 2 slots. Right now the chicks look very small in such a big box.

Are they free range or locked up? If they are locked up, do they have an area they can dust bathe? I had mites only once. And that was when I don't have a dust bathing area. I put a plastic tub in with sand and dirt mix for them.
Tub is cut like in the pic. I also used a spare one inch pvc pipe for the bottom edge of the cut part, slit one side of pic and put over the edge so the chickens could stand on it. I have 3 of them use it at once sometimes, they don't lay eggs in it because they like their nesting boxes with straw instead of dirt and sand

Hey!!! I've got about 10 of those tubs here!!! I just moved so great idea.

Candled all eggs. Overted a major disaster by very cautiously removing one bad (stinky) Midget White Turkey egg, whew! The other 6 look fabulous! Grandson's are already rubbing their palms as they dream of eating turkey! 1 Lavvender Orpington, 1 Buff Laced Polish, and 2 assorted Silkies were removed- they were all clear. So, all totaled, 5 eggs were tossed.
Your nose is a great way to find rotten eggs!

This is what I use on my birds. It works great. After switching we had a noticeable change in their overall health.
The chickens love it too!

Which seems odd because the water turns black.

one good idea for you is to build a top made from hardware cloth and a few pieces of wood. I made mine where I could roll 1 side up like a carpet and the other side I used an old baby gate for easy access.

curious how small are your midget whites. Kinda looking for a pair, kinda not. I don't know how they would with my sweetgrass turkeys. The midgets I have seen are quite large.
