The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Good Morning everyone...
I woke up to 7 little chicks this morning out of 13 eggs and it looks like at least a couple more will hatch today. I had a day where my power circuit tripped my outlet and the temp dipped to 65 degrees so I'm waiting until the weekend to see what happens with the other 6 eggs. I was so worried as day 18 was approaching and I didn't see the temp rising that I had done something wrong, but I see I'm just a worry wart. I'm also happy to report that 6 of my momma goats have had their kids. We had 2 a week ago Saturday, 2 this Saturday, 4 more on Monday and then yesterday a first time momma dropped triplets, but sadly one is very weak as they are all so small and momma doesn't want the weak one. To my surprise she made it through the night and momma let her nurse this morning with my help, so I'm not giving up on momma and the weak one yet. Gotta go feed hungry momma goats and get brooder set up for the chicks. Have a blessed day, God Is So Good To Us!!!!!

That He is. Good luck.

My Orust shipped eggs set on 3/3. Woke up this mourning two are out. And got two more pips. Will get pics up soon. Easter Orust baby's yay!!!!

Look how beautiful they are. Fluff little guys fluff up. It's only day 20 so I can't open the bator to grab them. I also have 9 barnyard mixes that are rocking but no pips yet. Looking at these guys I say to my self that's why they sell 99 dollars a chick. But I'm glad I paid for eggs instead. Fingers crossed for a least one hen and one Roo. So I can make more.

So cute, and that coloring is awesome!!!

Thanks so much. The nest and (still eggs) are about four inches off the ground Once a chick jumps down, it won't get back up to mama. I figured chicks would stay with her for a day or two so maybe the rest would hatch. All the eggs were laid on the same day.

Should I move the eggs and mama at this point to a nest on the floor? They are protected from other chickens in a closed off "wing" of the coop.

We often use a brick or a piece of scrap wood or two set in front of a nest to make 'steps' to allow the littles to navigate easier, once they are past the first day of 'toddling', which is usually spent under mama mostly anyway, they are normally very agile little jumpers who can easily handle an inch or two high step.
With that being said... our experience is that mama hens move with little fuss once they have chicks out, I would prefer to wait at least a day to minimize exposure of her remaining eggs, but if needed it should be do-able without too much fuss. Just have a plan in place to minimize time and stress.

I used to raise button quail and this little guy reminds me so much of a tuxedo button quail chick. I look forward to seeing them fluffed up!

Man, when it rains it pours, right? Let's hope things will get better..at least you can still have a good hatch. Glad you are back, I was wondering where you were!

Apparently it does!

Just noticed DH mixed in the chick feed with the layer feed. He said he filled the bin two days ago. It looks like what I've been feeding is mostly chick feed but with layer crumbles here and there. I'll be getting flock raiser on Thursday to prevent future mishaps. So will my chicks be ok till Thursday?
They should be fine.

I'm sorry for your silkies. I have a few now. My first ones and they are so cute. Just starting to feather some and so funny. I knew silkies had odd feathers but wow.

Mine were just starting to feather. Thankfully it's not a complete loss since the guy I bought them from wants to trade for some of the grey chicks I hatch.

$99 a chick? How much were the eggs!? They are beautiful though. I just looked up the Orust. Remind me of a dairy cow, but in chicken form. Loved the legs.
