The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

A little off topic but my secondary EE roo was found dead:( No sign of injury or illness. I'm down to one EE roo for 15 hens, as my CL roo has his own pen now. He was the only bird I had from my moms flock:(

So.. I want to see if any of the chicks that hatch for this HAL might be his. He was black barred with tons of red & gold leakage, full on beard / fluffy face. The kids called him the pretty one, so much flashier than the rest of our chickens. Is barring dominant? Can barring be identified at hatch? I think the barring would be the 1st clue if he fathered any. Any tips on identifying any of his chicks? Thanks
I'm sorry you lost the roo.

So, I sat down in my room for awhile to listen. Cheeping! Lots and lots of cheeping!

Ugh, thanks to the rain I had to pull the chicks out of the bator. Windows were fogged up so bad I couldn't even see through them. I had a plastic storage box with a top sitting around, so I'm using that for now. I'll probably cut the middle off the top and add some hardware cloth after it stops raining. For now it's only covering half the top to help keep warmth in.

I hope the rain stops and you humidity comes down.

Welcome to the world little one !!
First hatch, 4 more pip and 4 more waiting.

Probably just still weak.  Had one hatch out that I thought had splayed legs 2 weeks ago, couldn't get her legs under her, she figured it out after about 4 hours and has been fine ever since.

Doesn't sound like splayed legs, probably just weak. How long ago did it hatch?

Ok. About an hour ago. Starting to fluff up. I moved to the brooder with the other 2 in the hopes that the wood shavings help with traction.

I've got a external pip!

I'm a little bummed. Today is day 21. It's progressing with no pips, no peeps, no rocking, no nothing. I have 6 eggs in. Two were questionable at lockdown and four were alive and moving. I don't have any stinky odors, and humidity and temp are good. So I'm hoping they are late hatchers...just doesn't seem believable that all of them would be late hatchery. This is my first hatch.
If your temp ran a little low they could all come a little late.

A Silkie egg has pipped!

That's great!

If he was truly barred, then yes, his chicks would come out with barring... it is dominant... look for chicks with headspots...

Sorry for your loss...

X'2 on the barring..and on for your loss..so sorry!

Yes, ducks.

I've found that when they die that far along, at least for me, it's normally a temperature thing. Do you have multiple thermometers to verify temperatures?

I had two but they were both reading the same so I moved one because I needed it for my hatcher. I kept the most precise one in the incubator and it reads 99.5-99.7 almost all of the time. It never spikes or goes above 100.

ETA I have a hovabator genesis.

So 2 out of the 7 hatch along eggs were fertile.
But since my broody Serama passed I took in her batch and put them in the incubator. 2 of them hatched Monday and one hatched today.
Her legacy continues

Give them a little more time..through the day, you may see something. I think you just told me that these are from your birds. They should hatch fine if you saw them moving..if no temp spikes..too much humidity...?

Ok guys. My latest hatch has something going on with its legs. No splayed from what I can find via pictures but he can't get them under him. They bend and all he just keeps falling onto his butt. Just still real weak? Splayed legs? Idk. I'll watch him close.

Ahh...our first paddle walker. That's what I call them, if it's how I am picturing it. Give it some time to get strong on those little legs.
