I am sure I am not the first one to say this, but I haven't seen it posted before...

When I ordered my brooding plates from Premier 1, I also ordered 10 ceramic fake eggs. I have pullets who are laying on the ground instead of in nesting boxes and they rarely use more than the lower 5, so I thought these might help. They are cheap enough for me to say; "What the heck". They arrived yesterday and I put them in each nesting box.

So this morning I go out to collect eggs, and my first thought is; "Wow, they laid a lot of eggs"...then I remember the fake eggs. So I start collecting...and wow, you cannot tell these fake eggs from real ones other than by weight. I don't know about you, but my hand is not sensitive enough to know the difference between 35g and 60g eggs. Egg size, sure, but weight, nah. So I collected every egg from any nest that had more than one.

Turns out the ceramics are all light for their size, easy to distinguish when put on a scale. So I marked the fake eggs with an "F" (doh, shoulda done that before I put them in the nesting boxes, but then lolz, why don't they come marked??) So, if you buy them, mark them before you deploy them, lolz...

really I sold some in some eggs once. 2 I think. The Mexican guys father got so ****** off thought his son was playing a joke on him. I mark the rest of them after that. I guess the guy tried to crack them for a early morning breakfast. They wouldn't crack......

gotta question??? Has anyone used eucalyptus leaves for nest boxes. I was wondering if would keep mite ,lice and sticktight fleas away. I 've got a tree .. What ya think?

I haven't tried that, but I have mint all over... cut off big hunks and toss them in the coop in the corners...

Thank you everyone... I am very mad at the pigs and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Years ago at a horse ranch I worked on had this young 200 pound pig that loved to eat baby chickens. He would stalk them like a cat. HE MADE ME SO MAD. hE WAS QUIET TASTY B&Q. He was awful.. We broke that habit.. LOL

Coolest thing bout Buttons is they can be encouraged to go broody fairly easily, unlike Coturnix.

Interesting idea. I'll have to collect some perhaps. A few of the nests they've made themselves use gum leaves

Super GOOD MORNING HAL!!!

Bacitracin on egg membrane... that is pretty brilliant. I never thought of that! I have a fine misting spray bottle in case of humidity drop or something for spraying eggs that have pipped.

I havent, it probably wouldn't hurt! I do put leek greens in the coop when I have them to spare. What I just LOVE is they don't just eat them up, they peck at them for a few days. So, for the week I throw them in the coop, there are flare ups of fresh leek smell, which I really enjoy.
