The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Ok. I think I've talked him into another hatch. I need to calibrate my gauges before I do though. I'm going to spare 1 of my prettiest roosters from culling and toss a few ladies in there with him. That way I know exactly what eggs should be fertile.

it's still within the 2 week window since I separated them so I shouldn't have a lapse in fertility.

Mal the Mallard drake passed away last night. He was 10 years old. Looks like dad won't be getting any ducklings this spring. I'm not sure he'll get a new drake to replace him. I can't say I'm exactly sad. Mal took every opportunity to smack me in the face with his wings.

Dad's not happy about it though. We'd had Mal since he was a duckling and he did his job well. Never had an infertile egg and he wasn't too rough on his kids like some drakes can be. At least I don't have to worry about stress on the hens from him anymore.

On a brighter note, I may have more than just my eggs for the hatch! A very good friend of mine is dating a guy that raises chickens and said he just got 60 guineas last night at an auction! She's going to get me eggs from him for the hatch. I probably won't get guinea eggs for a while, but she's going to try to get me some of them as well when they start laying.

She said he has a 'foreign' breed that starts with a P, but Pendesenca is the only one I could think of off the top of my head and that ain't it. I'll have to talk to him myself one of these days and find out.

Maybe Pita Pinta like @ronott1
My peahens started laying early this year, so it looks like I will be setting some pea eggs!

I hope you and @Sahwithchicks both get fertile eggs in time to set them for the hatchalong!!
You have just under two weeks to get them....it can happen!

Check with @PetRock to see if the breeding pens are up yet. Chris was just getting his up so has to wait a month to have fertile egg ready.

If you can get them, I would recommend Pita Pintas!

Quote: My Isbars are not cuddlebugs, but they are not flighty. If I have treats, I need to watch where I step. I also have never had an aggressive Isbar rooster. I would definitely recommend this breed to those with young children without concern.

Quote: Yes, he likes to get not only my Svarthöna culls, but any old roosters or hens I want to trade to him. I brought him 10 extra roosters including 2 Svarthönas last month and he gave me a 24 lb. turkey and some turkey parts that he needed to move.

Oopsy. "Accidentally" won two egg auctions on eBay. 6 Turken eggs and 6 mystery GFF line eggs
How terrible!

I know it is just awful when the cat walks on the keyboard and posts a winning bid for me.

We wouldn't do that... Would we??

She loved the flock. But not like I do. She doesn't care about hatching and different breeds etc... We're special people when it comes to chickens. Some would say we're crazy chicken people. But I'm ok with that lol. We talked about marriage I said when I would choose you over my chickens I'll marry you. And we'll I would still choose my chickens. I know that's sounds terrible. She was awfully mad when I said that. I'm only 30 so I can wait a few years for marriage. Ideally i want her to know I will never give up my chickens and I don't want any boundaries on my hobby.
just find a chicken nut and you're good.

Funny but 30 doesn't feel like an "only" to me :D
