The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I'm doing some Ameraucana mixes. I'm crossing my fingers on my Buff Orpington to start laying between now and then (she's overdo!). Would love to have buff/ameraucana mix. Have 2 other ladies I will def be hatching from (white wyandotte & Araucana mix). This is my first hatch a long so I'm super excited! FX on the buff!

I mean, I feel like I'm a well educated person. I graduated High school and two years of college. I have a good job and interact with intelligent people every day, and until my best friend moved to Iowa and told me she had an Opossum issue I had no Idea. I even said "ummm do you mean a possum Jay?" and she laughed and said "ummm,no best friend I mean an Opossum. . . " I've never felt so perplexed in my life. How does someone live 26 years and miss a letter in front of a word for that entire time? Sorry I obviously haven't gotten over it bahahahaha.
You have learned a valuable lesson! We are constantly learning and the older we get and the more things we study the more we realize just how much we do not know. Often, like with your example, we learn that we were wrong about a lot of things.

Welcome to getting older!

I used to live in the South. We used to say Opossum. There are a lot of words that we changed...around...after moving west.

Totally off subject but I have to say it because I just found this out like a few months ago and I'm 26. It's Opossum. . . WHAAAT my whole life has been a lie. Evidently possums only live in like Austrailia or some crazy noise. Aaaand they get their name from the Opossums we have in the Americas. . . Sorry again but I couldn't believe live my whole life thinking they were called possums just to find out there's an O at the beginning. . . it blew my mind.

I grew up calling them possums, but spelling it opossum. Shrug.

I did have one of those mind blowing / reality altering situations a few years ago, though. I walked into a grocery store one day and it was lit up like Valentine's Day, but it was October. I thought to myself, "What the heck?" Did I miss something? I asked someone and they said it was Sweetest Day. Um, what? "Sweet-est DAY?" (Say this with a sneer, I did.) Sweetest day? Really? OOooooooooook. I had recently moved to the area at the time. I thought, much like Tyme machines and bubblers, that this was a Wisconsin thang.

So, I did what anyone would naturally do. I called my Mom. Mom is pretty much my litmus test for "should I have known about this?" Mom tells me, oh yeah, Sweetest day, been around for years.

Well, huh.

(I still think they made it up a few years ago and the whole world is in on the conspiracy to try to convince me it actually is a holiday, regardless of how ridiculous it sounds, just to see if I'm gullible to believe it.)

I'm in a dry climate and have no trouble storing hatching eggs on my kitchen counter.  My house temps range from 70 daytime to low 60's at night right now.  The eggs do fine.

It could, depending on what the EE carries.  Since EE's are mixes, you can never be sure what they carry until you breed them.  If he carries the blue egg gene, then some of the offspring would lay olive eggs when crossed with a Marans.  You'd likely get some that lay brown too, as the EE is likely not pure for the blue egg gene.

I appreciate your eggsplanation.

Quote: Nah, it's a thing. Most places don't actually set up for it since it isn't a money making holiday. Before all the Food Worlds started closing down, my mom was a Florist for one of them stores. She used to bring home stuff from the back room that they didn't use use anymore for whatever reason. One day she brought home a giant trash bag full of stuff and there were some little spike signs that said Sweetest Day on them. That confused the crap out of me because we NEVER set up for that day. The management was pretty relaxed about mom having family there to help her set up for the big holidays since they didn't have to pay us.

So, with the new roosters comes the removal of the other rooster. I had one as a spare through winter, just in case something happened to Fabio. Didn't really like how the younger rooster was turning out, anyway, so yesterday he went to crock pot camp. This morning I awoke to the delicious smell of chicken slow cooking, YUMMY. Meat was so tender, falling off the bone, so deboned the crock pot contents to chicken stock and meat-

and added carrots, onion, and celery (with Dana Carvey's choppin' broccoli song rolling in my head)-

plucked 2 eggs from under a hen and made up some noodles-

and have set the chicken/veggies to slow cook a bit before I add the noodles. Smells so delicious, can't wait for homemade chicken noodle soup for lunch!
