The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I checked them to make sure. No chirps, no pips (of any kind), and they're just starting to draw down. So I think I got lucky.

I am not sure if I posted that I was joining in the hatch a long or not but...
I set 12 eggs on 3/3 in my new janoel 12 incubator. One egg was clear at day 8. 11 eggs made it to lock down and literally aN hour later 1 hatched. It's was 19 days so I'm hoping it will be ok. It was a bantam though and I've read that some hatch early. The other eggs are larger and mixed breeds from a friend so I'm not sure what to expect when they begin hatching. I'm leaving the lonely little chick in there for right now.
I'm pretty exited about my first hatch and I'm glad my incubator works! These little chicks will be going back to their owner and I'm getting icelandic hatching eggs in couple weeks.I'm hoping this hatch goes well!

Does anyone know if increased calcium will help with body check eggs? I'm thinking this may have been Jazzy's problem. She's been laying some beautiful eggs lately after I remembered that I still have some oyster shell. No fixed cracks on any of them. Shape is much better.

She's about 4, but of my 3 older girls she's the only one that was having this problem. Rhodey and Sora's eggs have been fine. All the same age.

Oh, and for anyone that's wondering, Marble is doing much better since she's been treated for Vent Gleet. Her feathers are even starting to come back in!

Probably yes. If they are deficient in calcium, they have trouble with muscle contractions--which are needed to push the egg out. Combine that with missing or soft shells and you have Muchas Problemas...

:hugs back. Thanks! It just seems like plain common sense to me. I've never understood how people could just abandon or abuse animals or "trade them in for a newer model" so to speak... I mean, didn't that animal mean anything to you?? The worst part to me is when they get a puppy and then abandon it as a senior. I mean, you have had this dog at least 10, 12 years, sometimes even more, and surely it doesn't have THAT much time left, you can't just keep it a couple more years or months? You've had it this long.. and being abandoned is so hard on older animals too. It's sad. I don't understand either how you can have an animal that long, especially something as loving and loyal as a dog, and not have formed any bond with it?? The sad part too is I think in both the cases I mentioned above, they had kids. Horrible thing ti be teaching your kids. But sorry for rambling/ranting even more... haha

Well they will reap what they sow. When they are old and toothless there kids are likely to abandon them to Old Folks Homes and never visit.

Well, for a first timer I'm happy to report that I have 2 eggs that have hatched and it looks like there are 4 more that will hatch anytime. So with any luck the other 7 will follow. Yay!!!!!! I was so worried that none would hatch.

I put the eggs into lockdown today. I was going to wait until tomorrow but one of the eggs fell off the cradle and cracked the air pocket. I wrapped it in a wet paper towel and upped the humidity. I am using one of those fountain mist generators in an old pot that used to be the bottom of my pressure cooker. In the bottom of it are river stones. By piling the stones up in the middle of the pot full of water I can adjust how much mist the device puts out by changing the depth of where it sits in the pot. I have it running at 55% right now. As the water decreases it will start putting out more mist so I have to go check it every couple of hours. I think I am going to order one of the boxes that control humidity next month and plug the mister device into it..

Hi there! Is it too late to be added to the group?

I set my eggs on March 1 - and by set, I mean I switched three, small, unfertilized silkie eggs with six gorgeous, full sized, fertilized eggs while the mama silkie was eating. I really wish I'd had a video camera on her when she returned to find the new eggs!

She has sat faithfully on them ever since. When should I expect them to hatch and do I need to do anything for them since she has cared for babies before? I mean, besides food and water and making sure they don't have pasty-butt? Also, at what point do I give up on the eggs ever hatching? Thank you for your advice!!
