The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

@mlm Mike

I had 13 of 23 hatch.
Sorry for the delay in posting my numbers. I had a very draggy hatch. First pip was the 26th and last to hatch was the 29th. Very strange hatch. Early on I pulled 6 clear eggs, from my project spitz pen. I have since added a roo to that pen. Well he actually added himself & I left him in there. 7 of 11 shipped svart hona eggs hatched (thank you @KYTinpusher!!) while the other 4 were late quitters. 2 Ayam cemanis hatched out in their strawberry container. Thanks @draye for that idea!

Happy Belated Easter Everyone! Thanks for letting me tag along. This has been a tough thread to keep up with, but whenever I'm picking thru it, I always appreciate the stories and the supportive posts.

I don't mind the hens growing up- it's the Roos that become a problem. I'm just hoping my month olds get a bit bigger in the next week so I can send them to the auction. With all the babies my Broodies made over summer I have 50 chooks and only room for 20.

None of my 12 eggs made it. So none of mine will count towards the total. It was my first time incubating and I'm trying again! I have made one correction in that I'm now going to use a separate temp/humidity gauge. I'm also only going to candle twice (halfway through and right before lockdown). Also, I relocated my incubator away from windows and into my garage. It's been running for 24 hours, I've let my eggs sit and come to room temp. I also cleaned out my incubator with a bleach/water solution. I'm hoping all of these changes will prove successful! I'm incubating Bielefelder, an EE/Rhode Island Red cross, Rhode Island Red, and Black Stars (Barred Rock hen and Rhode Island Red rooster). Wish me luck!!

Did you already join us for the April HAL?

Perhaps we can help you better with this hatch, Will have a few questions to ask you first though

@bappl

Questions for you!

What bator are you using?
where they shipped or your own eggs/local eggs? Shipped eggs = Change of plans
How old were the eggs at set?
They were stored and turned cool conditions?
Have you misted or washed the eggs?
How old is your flock?
Turner or no turner?
Incubated Air cell Upright or horizontal??

Fan or no Fan?
You know temps should be different for Fan vs still air models?
You calibrated thermo hygros and know not to rely on the one that came with the bator?

You have more than one thermo hygro and they had been calibrated?

You have rotated your eggs around the bator at candles?

You realize humidity is NOT a set number just a tool to get the correct weight loss in the egg?
You understand the majority of people for standard hatching eggs run the first 7 days 25-30% humidity (possibly 35%for shipped eggs) and adjusted from there for weight loss?
You understand that you can in fact candle every two days after day 7 to just keep a closer eye on weight loss so you dont need to make major changes later on?
Try to add water above in containters and not in the troughs until lockdown?
You know that you should not use the vent holes to adjust humidity?
AGAIN....You understand humidity is NOT a set number, most of us begin incubation 25-35% the first week and then adjust as needed per air cell growth/weight loss.

Can you get pics uploaded on BYC and understand that pics help us to help you?

This is where we are at next

Thank You and Congratulations on you hatch!

I have lots of cute babies, but I am going to have trouble figuring out which breed is which...
.

This is my spraddle leg chick doing fine!

They are so cute!

Love pictures. Will post mine tomorrow. I have some mixes that has me crazy with the colors.
So I hatched 15 out of the 24. Not bad I guess with the temperature fluctuations. :D

That's great! 15 new chicks are great numbers and definitely better numbers than a lot of people on here today. Lots of sad news. Congratulations on the new babies. I can't wait to see the photos!
