The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I have a question......if a Toulouse goose is with several ganders (African and Chinese) then taken away, she lays eggs for a week. Can those eggs be fertile by different ganders?? Could some hatch 1/2 Toulouse/African And another hatch 1/2 Toulouse/Chinese ???

Its very possible. My buff hen laid a nest, out of it hatched buffs, chinese mix and some embden as well.

@jchny2000. Thank you so much. I know dogs and cats can have different sires to a littler. I was trying to figure out why my two look alittle different. Only had the one female so I know who mom was. I'm thinking of getting a couple Toulouse females. That way babies would be over half Toulouse. Need to wait to make sure these are both male. Again, thank you for responding.

I have another question for you. This is one of my geese and I'm unsure now of sex. I have just noticed the hangey down part between the legs. Do you think goose or gander?? Just an opinion. It will be a year old next month.

Wow, he? is a mix for sure, but probably gander. That neck and legs. The lobe tho makes me wonder, seeing the lobe it is hard to judge. Any idea what mix it is? Exhibition Toulouse and true African males may have a lobe. All of my boys do not. I have seen pictures of several breeder quality geese than the fellas had one. Almost wonder if there is Pom or cotton patch mixed in. Gorgeous goose!

@jchny2000. Thanks, I guess I was just hoping. The place I got his mother had several different breeds. They had advertised Brn & Wht Chinese. But some were a lot larger than others and the mom ( Toulouse/T mix) was from them. I hatched the first 2 eggs she had after I got her then gave her and the other 3 to my cousin whom they were bought for. Was supposed to be 3 Females and 1 Male. Ended up being 3 M and 1 F. So they had no idea what they had.

And I do not know geese but am totally in love with these 2. Thank you so much.

I have a funny question (I think). I have a Chinese white female. She is 2 years old. Last may she was very broody (she was alone; we had to rehome the gander when he became impossible to keep; they were the only 2). I got a gosling, tossed it in the nest and Mother Goose became a mother. She was thrilled (it seems). The baby was an African gray (it was a mixed race adoption). Now the gray is on the way to 1 year old. I thought it was a girl mainly because the gray is similar in size to the white, knobs are similar. Then, we had hanky panky in the farmyard and I started thinking we had another gander. At first Mother (white) was on top but then it was always the gray (who I was naming "little sister" in Thai but.....). No eggs. No nest. Until....

Just the other day, 2 eggs, a nest, just like last year (no broody goose though, not yet). "Wow" I was thinking "We might have babies; very cool" (if I can get a broody mood on Mother). Well, today, I caught the gray IN THE NEST and fluffing out and caring for it. Under her were 2 distinctly different eggs! Well, I am not an animal husbandry expert by any means but I am clearly thinking these are 2 different mommas to the eggs. The first 2 eggs looked just like Mother's from last season. Today, one was clearly Mother's and the other... well it was long and skinny and nothing like an egg Mother ever laid last year.

So, what is going on?? I have 2 females? But they are acting as if one of them is male....?? Except they both lay eggs... and neither is broody at the moment.

I must have 2 females or i have a gander that will sit on a nest and Mother is laying very very different eggs.

Clear as mud to this city girl.

@hermajestyis Welcome to BYC. Females will act like they are mating too. so sounds like you have 2 females so if you want goslings your either going to have to get another gander or buy fertile eggs and put under one when they go broody. It takes a while for one to go broody they usually will add an egg every other day till they get around 8-9 then they usually go broody.
