Yes in my opinion you can.

- first find the best broody breed in your flock. For me I used my buff Orpington Buffy.
- second make a nest in a large dog crate. Make a nest in the box and put the box in the coop or near the coop so she can hear her flock or in your garage or house where there is relatively no noise.
- third set 8 golf balls and two eggs for the first day
- fourth, after she goes to roost find her catch her and put her in the crate w/ food an water ( I fed Buffy scratch not layer feed)
- after she sets on the nest put the real eggs under her
- you should notice she only poops once a day, laying won't stop at first but will, and food and water consumption will drop. Hens will eat 80% less when broody.
- cover her up so it's dear and she cant see out.
TIPS:
You should notice feathers in the crate after five days.
Don't bug her too much.
After she shows all signs of broodiness ( a broody patch of no feathers on her stomach, skwaking at you , pecking your hand, large stinky poop etc.) she is committed.

I hope this trick works for you!!!!!! ;)

How many times has this worked for you? Is it possible, that your hen might have been on the verge of going broody, before you decided to lock her up? I think I would like to see more than one example, before I conclude the method you are using is valid. Sorry, I guess I'm just a perpetual skeptic.
