The Ameraucana Thread: Where everything and anything about the breed can be discussed (APA, Non-Stan

Those mites are not going to stay in one coop. I have two coops that are several hundred yards from each other, two chickhouses, and several breeding pens. When I got mites, it started in one small breeding pen and eventually spread to all of them.

If you to the ABC site, there was an extensive discussion on how to get rid of mites. Suffice it here to say that I am now four months plus with NO mites anywhere and that is after spending over THREE YEARS trying to get rid of them.

God Bless,

Thank you.

That color varation is from my efforts to increase size and vigor. If it is a rooster do not use unless you have to.That is if it is really light.I have been selecting for chick color.John Blehm has suggrsted this on all varaties. Some say you can sex wild type pattern at day old by color.Others say it is not reliable.Anyway 3 colors of stripes is male and 2 female.I did toe punch one hatch to see if it is reliable.Problem is some have mostly 2 colors with just a little of the brown.I think if selected for it would be more reliable. You may have one carrying blue as at that time there may have been a hen with blue in there.Blue silver is a side project.I removed that hen as some did not want the chance of blue silver.I had enough for myself and removed her.

God Bless,

Yeah, found them in the other coops again. I went ahead and got some flea stuff that has the same active ingredient as frontline, but cheaper, lol. Will treat the birds tonight. How many times do you need to treat??

Does anyone know if roosters grow their beards and muffs slower than hens? If not I have two birds that I am suspecting are roosters and may be clean faced.

Give them time. They sometimes look clean faced as they grow.Roosters also let the hens groom all the beard off sometimes.

Quote: I used ProNyl from Wal-Mart. Same as Frontline only cheaper. I believe the active ingredient is Fipronil(sp?). Last time I was in Wal-Mart they didn't have the ProNyl but had an Adams product with Fipronil and it was quite a bit cheaper than Frontline too. The product says it works for 30 days but, as I said above, it's been 4mos and still no sign of them back. I check my birds ever now and then. If I see a reemergence of them, I'll treat the whole flock again. Praying that don't happen!

God Bless,

That's the stuff I used! I put three drops on the adult hens, one drop on the chicks, and two drops on my adolescents. Cleaning the coops on Monday, so will see if any mites are left.
