The American Orpington Fanciers Thread

This thread has been a bit slow lately. With the Orp Photo thread locked for cleanup, maybe we can all just discuss our American SOP type Orpingtons here.

Please no bickering!

Here is a comparison with the American SOP Orpington and a normal hatchery produced Orpington.

Is the one on the left the hatchery Orp or the SOP Orp?

Yep, the one on the left is the hatchery bird. It's a very pretty and nice bird. Would make any backyard flock happy. But when compared to one bred to the Standard of Perfection, it can not compare or compete.

I can see -- the SOP fella is large!

So, maybe you can help me figure out my Orpington girls. I have a pair of them in my coop, and my big girl is fat, pushy, and a lot heavier than a rooster of mine who is more than twice her size-- but her feathers are flat, close, and sleek. My little girl's feathers are puffy, soft, and fluff up very nicely around her body. What does the American SOP say about how their feathers should be?

Pictures of those two would be a big help. Most Orps are fairly fluffy.
