The Animals of our local Shelter

Some joyful dogs enjoying the outdoor run to the fullest.
smile.png
Because of asthma I couldn't go to the shelter last week, but this week I'm going to see if any of the dogs got adopted (or if there are any new ones in).

Karmin taking a roll in the grass. She loves to roll around to scratch her own back, particularly in the taller, drier grass.

Karmin running in wild circles for the sheer joy of it. She tucks her tail and just plows around. Thankfully she doesn't plow into me, but if I praise her for being so cute then she gets overly excited and starts mouthing me, so I just have to let her do her thing.

A malamute that had escaped his owners house while the owner was on vacation (someone else had gone to care for him). He was brought back to his owner and happily reunited.

Karmin hoping for a treat.

Karmin exhausted but pleased after racing Briana through the fence (they loved that game, they would touch noses at the end, then run back and forth. Briana would always let the other dog win).

Logan posing for a picture. He really thinks highly of himself, look at that tail held high! He's thinking "thank you, thank you very much".

A new dog that came in the week before last, this is Thor. He has a half-and-half face. If you look close the side with the ear that goes up is tenser, his lip doesn't hang down as far as the side where the ear goes down. Very odd. I'm thinking he may also be deaf because he can be slow to respond to sound, but that could have just been him sleeping deeply.

Thor cuddled up on his blanket looking so cute. The poor guy didn't seem to be feeling too well, but hopefully he's doing better now.

Logan running, enjoying the freedom of being off the leash and outdoors in the fresh-air and sunlight. I think all dogs find pure joy in running outside in the grass. So many sights and smells and space. And they get to have a friend with them to enjoy it too.

Its been a little while since a report, so I feel like I should get around to it. Working at the shelter is so much fun, but it isn't easy when you've got asthma. However, today was a good day as far as walking dogs. They were eager and happy, and I got to walk Saffron for the first time.

Here is Frankie. I promised I would tell her story, and so here she is. Frankie was a Black lab x Husky mix female with the incredible mutation of having one blue eye and one eye that was half blue and half brown. However, she also had managed to inherit both breeds incredible energy and drive to have something in her mouth, and so she tended to scratch and jump and chew on you non-stop. Yep, the entire time. It was kind of painful.

However, Frankie was only this way because of the pent-up energy inside of her. A good long, brisk walk or jog and a chance to run around a yard would tire her out and she would become far calmer and sweet.

She loved to hold things in her mouth, like a lab, including her leash. here she is chewing on a tree.

Oh, and a random picture of Karmin racing Brianna.

Frankie was a sweetie and very intelligent. She could learn tricks in mere minutes, such as sit, down, touch, ect. I'm not sure how much she had been taught before, but one lesson got her to know sit and down for me.

She loved to be petted and held and cuddled, but she was easily distracted too.

And she was a total goofball!!!

here she is laying down, just like I was teaching her. She would jump up and try to leap on me for a treat as soon as she was done, but it was progress. : )

Frankie was adopted a couple weeks ago, hopefully by a wonderful, understanding owner. I can say that I will miss her, but I'm glad I'm not getting scratched up every day either. Good luck, Frankie! Hope you're new home is awesome!

This is Peppy, a shy Chihuahua mix that was surrendered by his owner. He is being kept in the Surgery Room for now, but hopefully can be put up for adoption soon, as he is very sweet once he gets to know you.

A new puppy in quarantine. This little guy has a very high-pitched bark, but he is totally sweet and a beautiful red color. He is yet to have a name.

Someone is interested in adopting Fulton once he is given the OK! Yay!!! I got to take him on his first walk with me and he was very happy, very sweet, great at following after you. He is deaf, which meant it could be difficult when I would call him and he wouldn't turn with me, but he was watchful. He is older, so his legs are a little bit arthritic, but he loves to jog, just like all other huskies do.

He enjoyed sniffing around.

And of course a treat too. : )

He posed for a picture in his too large collar. Yesterday he got his first official collar, since his neck was finally healed enough for it. Yay Fulton!

Katia is an elderly lab mix female who is so, so, so sweet but arthritic. She didn't really want to go on a walk as much as just sniff around and enjoy my company, but she was so friendly and gentle she went on a short one anyways. She's such a wonderful girl.

BJ getting some time out in the run to sniff around. This dog will go to the bathroom for EVER! He must not like to go potty in his pen or something, even in the outdoor section, because he will run as fast as he can to the nearest bush and I have to weight for like a minute and a half for him to be done. He also spins in about a million circles before finally going poo, which means I look ridiculous standing next to a dog that keeps yanking me this way and that as he spins in mad circles. Silly dog. : )

Sam is a new dog, a Border Collie x Black Lab. She's full of energy and smart, just like her two breeds. Her large nipples seem to show she was a mother at one point as well.

This here is General, a mix breed (probably with Pit in there). He is still in quarantine. he is a little dog aggressive but is always happy to see me, even if he hasn't been given the OK to be taken on walks (I don't think the dogs are walked before neutered and given their shots).

Here is Zorro, enjoying a run outside.

You can see the newly planted trees in the run and the yard, which kind of scared him for a second until he gave them a sniff.

By the way, Sparrow, Fletcher, Zoe, Captain, Renee, and Frankie have all been adopted in just the last few weeks! Yay for Fletcher, the blind dog, that he could finally find a loveing home where he doesn't have to be anxious anymore. I'm so glad for him.
Coralyn, because of all the times she was bred and her poor care and genetics, suffered from bad cancer and had to be put-down yesterday. She was such a sweet, lively girl, but it just goes to show that breeding double-merles is never the way to go. She passed at such a young age, but her aggression had been growing, and likely her pain as well. We gave her such a wonderful last month, its hard to be sad, but I just wish that people wouldn't have bred her, then the tumors would not have grown and she would not have had to go so soon. However, she is happy somewhere else, able to see and hear and run to her hearts content. RIP Cory.

I'll update again soon. : )

Trapper is a Husky that came in to the shelter for a short time. I'm not sure if he got returned to his owners or what, but he wasn't there very long. he had one blue eye and one brown eye.

And was very cute too. : )

Here you can see his two different eye colors better.

Here is Saffron when she was still in quarantine, before being moved out into the adoptable kennel section. She is a husky mix of some kind found as a stray.

Here is General, a pit-bull mix still in quarantine. He isn't available for the volunteers to walk him yet, but he seems like a very sweet, hyper dog.

Here is Thor, enjoying a walk outside.

Here is Rivers, the beagle mix female, showing off her somewhat heart-shaped marking on her face. Boy is she just FULL of energy. She can't stop moving, even when cuddling. But she is so, so sweet and adoring also.

Sam, the Border Collie x Lab, saying high to the camera (and showing off those brown eyes of hers).

Dodge, a very old stray, moved back into a kennel with some food and water. He manages to get around some, but he still has partial paralysis in his back-legs. Hopefully some therapy and proper nutrition will help with that.

Here is Lester again, the brindle mix-breed. He acts like a puppy, but I'm not sure what his estimated age is.

An adorable puppy in quarantine, awaiting to either be put up for adoption or claimed by his owner. Such a sweetie.

Rivers again, enjoying a run out in the yard.

And of course crazy-hyper Saffron is enjoying it too.

"Hi there," she says, grinning for the photo. : )

Just some random photos I've compiled and wanted to share. I won't be going to the shelter until Wednesday, but I'll let you all know if any of the dogs or cats got adopted. As far as cats are going, a good lot of them have been adopted through a partnership with a pet store. Kittens go that way, as do many of the friendly adult cats. For the first time since I can remember the Cat Quarantine/ICU was completely empty of cats. Yay!

Here is Frankie again, the Husky x Lab. She is investigating the near-by creek, which I'm pretty sure must have mink in it, as well as ducks, frogs, ect.

Frankie showing off her pearly whites as she runs around the pen.

This is Zorro racing Brianna and loving it! Dog smile everyone!! : )

Zorro taking a rest to catch his breath (and strike a pose).

Karmin racing Brianna (poor Brianna was exhausted by the end of it. She got far more exercise then the others combined!)

Frankie, showing her half-and-half eye as she awaits a treat or some pettings. Blue eyes can be a little creepy, but they also show such intelligence and thought that they are amazing to look at.

Matrix. He has finally gained enough weight to be neutered, then he will likely be ready to be put up for adoption (that is, if he isn't going through heart-worm treatment).

Sam saying hello.

Renee, who was very quickly adopted. She is a shih tzu mix.

Renee giving an adorable look. She actually went so fast I don't remember ever having walked her. If I did it was the day my camera ran out of batteries.

Zoe, a mix-breed girl who went really quickly after quarantine.

Piglet/Sabreena, loving the pettings she is getting.

A dog looking through doggy-paw-prints. This girl is in quarantine right now and I'm not allowed to walk her. However, I do talk to her while walking the other dogs, so she knows its just me.

Thor, sniffing around to see what other dogs have been outside recently.

The joy of running (a "motion picture" of Rivers) : )

Rivers, chilling long enough for a good shot of her face.

BJ, possibly looking for some good grazing. Yes, the dogs love the fiber grass has to offer, particularly with upset stomachs.

Sam.

This stray I'm pretty sure ended up finding his owner because he never went up for adoption that I saw. That's so awesome for him/her.

One of the two quarantined dogs looking through the window of their crates.

Rivers jumping for joy....

... But not so sure what to think about the newly planted trees in the run.

Frankie, panting in the heat of the son. This is probably the only picture I have of her where she looks semi-calm. : )

Zorro, all out running, just as dogs LOVE to do.

Brianna racing Karmin. Poor Karmin's short legs make it hard for her to win a race.

Karmin, tuckered out from the racing, asking for a treat.

Frankie, showing how labs just love to hold things in their mouths. No, I was not asking her to do this, I actually told her to stop (she's got sharp teeth, even if she doesn't mean it). She's just one crazy, hyper girl.

Dodge, resting in his pen. This is before he got moved to his own kennel. He seems to be doing slightly better, as he can at least walk now.

Rivers, thrilled she gets to go on a walk.

Thor, showing off his crooked ears as he strolls around the field.

Rivers, skipping for the fun of it. I have to wonder what she is mixed with, as I don't know Beagle's to be this wiggly.

But she sure is a beautiful girl. : )

And cuddly.

Oh, and one last picture of Saffron, smiling for the camera. She's wiggly too, but she has the excuse of having husky in her. If you get a husky, expect a dog with ENERGY!

Things are going well at the shelter, though it is Kitten Season so the kittens are flooding in. I'm planning on fostering a couple for a few weeks until they are old enough to be adopted out. : )

Rivers and Tank have both been adopted, though Tank is still with us until he is picked up. Someone is interested in Fulton and Karmin, so hopefully they will find good homes soon, and Matrix, Carmen (the other Carmen) and Fozzy have been put up for adoption. Hopefully Thor can join them soon, as he is doing well, friendly and in good shape.

Here is Barley, a female German Shepherd x Chow mix. She is a sweet thing with a stub-tail, but she has had a history of seizures and so is being kept in quarantine for the time being.

Matrix, enjoying his first walk with me. He couldn't wait to be let outside.

He's one muscular, lean dog. He's gained a lot of weight, enough that he was neutered and so now he can be put up for adoption.

Brianna was loving getting to play with Tank, the bully-breed mix. She is so playful and fun-loving and full of energy, great with other dogs. I think all of them like her, even the normally aggressive ones.

She's way faster then Tank.

Thor, enjoying a chance to be out in the sunshine.

And Sam, playing out in the yard, which includes a pool for the warm weather. : )

The dogs are loving the warm weather and a chance to play in the kiddie pools we have set up for them. They also have fans in the kennel so that they can keep cool inside as well. It think they actually prefer the concrete floor to their blankets or beds right now, because it stays cooler.

Being kitten season, I've been doing a lot with changing litter boxes, folding litter boxes, reporting any signs of sickness in kittens, giving them blankets, and I just finished my paperwork and took home five orphaned kittens that I am fostering (all about 10-18 days of age). They're so cute, but also a little smelly and noisy when they mew and mew for food. They love their bottle. : )

Briana got adopted and the puppy, Tank, is pending adoption. The other dogs up for adoption are LouLou, Sam (she's a girl), BJ, Sabreena (or Piglet, she goes by either name), Karmin, Ilene, Uno (a black mix-breed puppy), Matrix, Carmen (the other Carmen), and Snoopy. Still awaiting the go-ahead are Fulton, Thor, General and Barley (a dog with a history of seizures). They are okay for me to walk but can't go out into the main kennel yet for various reasons.
Coco and Brandy are still waiting the end of their quarantine in the back kennel, so I can't walk them. they like to say hello when I come by though, with a bark of greeting and wagging tails.
Garrick and Raider are still in foster while Shelby, Katia, Clancy, Logan and Zorro are working with inmates at the local correctional facility.

Our new dogs (either drop-offs or dogs founding wandering, awaiting an owner to pick them up) are Lester and Axel, a blue pit-bull, an Australian Shepherd, a boxer mix, and a Shih Tzu mix.

Matrix is doing well getting past his dog-aggression, it seems to be mainly a "fence fighting" thing (dogs are extra aggressive when their is a fence between them). He loves to spend time with people, though his enthusiasm means he is not gentle at all. He loves to run and run and when he does he will run into you and nearly knock you down! The silly guy is so friendly though, he means well in everything he does.

The puppy Uno looks a lot like Carmen, both are black and stocky, looking like lab x pit mixes. However, Uno is far younger and not yet given the go-ahead for walks outside (meaning he hasn't been given all his vaccinations yet). Carmen loves to be let out into the run to play, but enjoys being with people on walks too.

Ilene and Karmin are still awaiting adoption, but know the routine quite well and so are easy to work with in that sense.

Snoopy's dog aggression means I don't usually let him out into the run (he would just bark through the fence) but he adores going on walks with people and is very sweet and LOVES to be given pets and cuddles.

LouLou is on special adoption and just got brought back to the shelter apparently (I recognize her name but haven't seen her in a long while). She is a tan and white pit mix and is very friendly but VERY HYPER. Some people came to look at her but realized that she didn't want to sit still and say high. Most of the dogs here don't seem too into that, they want to go running and playing with a new owner, not sit at their feet. The sitting at their feet part comes after their energy out, the day is done, and they have learned to trust their new friend. It can be hard to know what a dog will act like after it gets that first over-load of excited energy out.

I'll try to get some pictures up soon, especially of the new kittens. : )
