Hi everyone! I am a pretty new to the concept of backyard chickens, although I am somewhat familiar with farm/livestock from years ago in rural MS. I just bought a house in Birmingham, AL, and I plan on setting up a coop soon and getting just a few hens for some eggs. Since I don't have much experience, I will say what I am planning to do: get a variety of good egg-layers to start off with such as a RIR, australorp, golden comet, and maybe an orpington. I don't have a coop yet, but it should be coming in soon from MPC. Gonna stain the outside and paint the inside for easier cleaning, as well as put a predator apron down around it. I would like to let the chickens free range a bit, but I have to really figure out what all I need fencing wise (mostly repair to current fence) before I can do that confidently.

Other than that, I am a cat owner finishing up graduate school and excited to start having fun with some chickens. Also fresh eggs, my diet involves a lot of eggs.

Oh and the P.S. - I found BackyardChickens through google searches about how to get started. If I was searching anything chicken related, this site always come up. Pretty handy.

Thanks everyone for the introductions. I am definitely excited to get started. I found some pullets for sale not too far from me, hopefully there are still available when I get the coop ready in about two weeks. I should have the coop in hand next week, but I want to take my time staining/painting and securing it, and really making sure it is aired out well before introducing the hens. I am looking forward to trying to identify who-laid-what-egg!
